Trebles for
1984 - Ian Rush bagged a hat-trick in torrential rain as we beat SL Benfica 3-1 at Anfield in a European Cup Second Round encounter.
1998 - Michael Owen scored four goals, including a penalty, as we thumped Nottingham Forest 5-1 at Anfield. Steve McManaman grabbed the other.

An Olympic champion
1908 - Arthur Berry was in the United Kingdom side that won Olympic gold by beating Denmark 2-0 in the Final at White City Stadium.

A treble against
1925 - Frank Osborne scored a hat-trick for Tottenham Hotspur as they beat us 3-1 in a First Division match at White Hart Lane. South African keeper Arthur Riley made his reds bow in this game, becoming the first player born outside the British Isles to represent the club. Dick Forshaw netted our goal.

Razor sharpened
1987 - Ray Houghton made his first-class reds debut as a rare Gary Gillespie goal was enough to hand us victory at Luton Town.
1960 - We also visited Kenilworth Road, when we won a League Cup Second Round replay 5-2, our first win in the new competition. This came courtesy of a brace each from Kevin Lewis and Roger Hunt, and a Dave Hickson goal.

Also in Europe
2001 - We visited Boavista in the Champions League for our 200th game in European competition, with a Danny Murphy goal being enough to secure a point in the first group stage.
1972 - We beat AEK Athens 3-0 at Anfield in a UEFA Cup Second Round tie, with Phil Boersma and Peter Cormack on the scoresheet, and Tommy Smith converting from the spot.
1973 - Slobodan Janković struck a goal for Crvena Zvezda, also known as Red Star Belgrade, from thirty yards before Vladislav Bogićević volleyed in from a seemingly offside position. Chris Lawler bagged our consolation as we lost this European Cup encounter 2-1 at the same stage. Unfortunately, we also lost the Anfield return by the same score.

Istanbul despair
2007 - We lost 2-1 at Beşiktaş JK, leaving us with just a single point from our opening three Champions League group games, and teetering on the brink of early elimination. Steven Gerrard headed a late consolation after the home side had taken the lead through a Sami Hyypiä own goal, his second in five days, and a Bobô strike.

Stan no longer the man
2007 - Steve Staunton was sacked as Manager of the Republic of Ireland after 21 months in charge in which he had overseen just six wins in seventeen games.

RIP Sam
1966 - Keeper Sam Hardy died in Chesterfield. He signed from his hometown club for £340 in May 1905 and had made 240 reds appearances, helping us to the League title in 1906 as well as winning fourteen England caps while at Anfield, and two FA Cups for Aston Villa after moving to the Midlands in May 1912.

Carra's unwelcome record
2010 - Jamie Carragher a club record eighth own goal as we beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Anfield, after Sotirios Kyrgiakos had headed in his third and last reds goal. Fernando Torres struck the winner, with all the goals coming in the second half.

Bimpson's last
1959 - Louis Bimpson played his 102nd and final reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Portsmouth, with Ronnie Moran grabbing our goal early on in this Second Division fixture.

First and last caps
1925 - Tom Bromilow won his fifth and final cap for England as they held Northern Ireland to a goalless draw in the British International Championships at Windsor Park, with new reds signing David McMullan winning the first of his three caps for the home side, for whom Elisha Scott was in goal.

Losing to the Mancs
1981 - Terry McDermott netted from the spot as Manchester United returned down the East Lancs Road with all the points, having won 2-1.

Disappointment at Turf Moor
1967 - We drew 1-1 at Burnley with Chris Lawler on the scoresheet.
1914 - We did even worse, returning home on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline in another top-flight meeting, with keeper Ken Campbell playing his hundredth reds game.

Thumping wins
1896 - We beat Blackburn Rovers 4-0 at Anfield in a top-flight match, with George Allan, Bill Michael, Jimmy Ross and Malcolm McVean all netting. Keeper Harry Storer saved a penalty from Rovers' Anderson.
1942 - George Mills and Jack Balmer were on target as we won 4-1 in a Wartime League game at Manchester City, with Cyril Done netting twice.

Venison back from Turkey
1995 - Graeme Souness signed Barry Venison for Southampton from his previous club Galatasaray for £850,000. He played thirty times for the Saints in the next two years before retiring from the game.

Jonjo on target
2008 - Future red Jonjo Shelvey bagged his only goal for England Under-17's as they thumped Estonia 7-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Spain.
