On this day in Liverpool history - 22nd October
Saturday, 22nd October 2011

Nicol's first
1983 - Steve Nicol grabbed his first reds goal, a late winner in our 1-0 League victory at Queens Park Rangers.

Reds in Moscow
2002 - We became the first English team to beat Spartak Moskva on their own patch as a Michael Owen hat-trick of header, left-foot and right-foot shots handed us a 3-1 Champions League group win. Grégory Vignal suffered the rare indignity of coming on as a substitute, and then later himself being substituted.
1992 - David Burrows had to play the last six minutes of our European Cup Winners' Cup game at the same club in goal, after Bruce Grobbelaar was sent off with the score at 2-2. We went on to lose 4-2, with Mark Wright and Steve McManaman having netted for the reds and Mark Walters hitting the post.

Robbie on target
2008 - Robbie Keane gave us the lead at Club Atlético de Madrid when we played at the Estadio Vicente Calderón in the group stage of the Champions League, with Simão Sabrosa netting a late equaliser to ensure we left with a share of the spoils. Rafael Benítez was able to rest Keane, Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso as the second half progressed. In the lead-up to the game, UEFA had originally decided that the match would have to be played in another city, due to crowd trouble at their previous game against Olympique de Marseille.

Doni's day
1979 - Substitute keeper Alexander Doni was born in Jundiaí, São Paulo. He arrived on a free transfer from Roma last July and has so far sat on the bench on ten occasions without making a senior appearance.

More births and a death
2009 - Left-back Ray Lambert died. He joined the reds when he was just thirteen, and went on to make 341 first-team appearances, netting just twice, including being part of the 1947 title-winning side. He also won five caps for Wales.

1938 - George Gillett Jr. was born in Racine, Wisconsin. The then owner of the Montreal Canadiens ice hockey team brought fellow American Tom Hicks on board and took over the club in February 2007. He was eventually forced to sell up in October 2010.
1966 - Mark Seagraves was born in Bootle. He only made two reds appearances before joining Manchester City in September 1987. He was Reserve Team Coach at Derby County until December 2008, working with fellow ex-red Paul Jewell.

Merseyside rivalry on the international stage
1928 - Dixie Dean scored as England beat Elisha Scott's Northern Ireland 2-1 at Goodison Park. He remains the most recent Everton scorer past a Liverpool goalkeeper at full international level. Future reds defenders Ernie Blenkinsop and Tom Cooper both lined up alongside Dean.

Sir Roger for England
1966 - Roger Hunt netted as England won 2-0 in Northern Ireland in a European Championships qualifier, in a game that also counted towards the British International Championships.

Thousands of games
1955 - We played our 2,000th League game, winning our Second Division encounter at Bury 4-1, thanks to a brace apiece from Alan Arnell and Billy Liddell.
2006 - We deservedly lost 2-0 at Manchester United in what was our 5,000th official match, and Steven Gerrard's 350th reds game.

Also in Europe
1975 - We won 3-1 at Real Sociedad in our UEFA Cup Second Round first leg encounter, with Steve Heighway, Ian Callaghan and Phil Thompson all on the scoresheet. This was an especially notable result as the Spanish outfit had been unbeaten at home in the League for the previous two years.
1980 - Terry McDermott netted the only goal of the game inside five minutes at Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen in our European Cup tie at the same stage.

Derby spoils shared
1977 - Everton held us to a goalless draw at Anfield.

Anfield debutants
1988 - David Burrows made his reds bow in our goalless draw with Coventry City.
1994 - Forward Lee Jones made his League debut as a substitute in our 3-0 defeat of Wimbledon. He never made a first-team start, and left for Tranmere Rovers in May 1997. Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler and John Barnes struck that day.

Lucas's last
1932 - Full-back Tommy Lucas played his 366th and final reds game as we lost 3-2 to Arsenal in a top-flight fixture at Anfield. Dave Wright and Gordon Hodgson were on target for the reds.

Trebles for and against
1892 - Forward John Miller scored a hat-trick in our 5-0 win at Higher Walton in the Lancashire League, with Tom Wyllie adding a brace. Right-half John McCartney made his reds debut in this game.

1910 - Albert Shepherd scored four goals for Newcastle United for the second successive season against us as they thumped us 6-1 at St. James' Park, with Ernest Peake nabbing our consolation.
1949 - We also faced the Geordies when Billy Liddell and Kevin Baron struck as they held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield in another First Division fixture.

A win at the Lane at last
1921 - We secured our first ever victory away to Tottenham Hotspur at the eighth attempt, with Harold Beadles nabbing the only goal of the game.

Michael Owen's soccer skills over
1999 - The sixth and final part of "Michael Owen's Soccer Skills" aired on BBC2 at 6.00pm.

International debuts
1989 - Jari Litmanen won his first Finnish cap, while still a Reipas Lahti player, as they won 1-0 at Trinidad & Tobago in a friendly.
1921 - Tommy Lucas won his first cap for England in their 1-1 draw with Northern Ireland in the British International Championships at Windsor Park, with clubmates Elisha Scott and Billy Lacey in action for the home side.
1927 - Future red Tom Cooper made his England debut in the same fixture, with Elisha Scott's side triumphing 2-0.

1924 - Billy Lacey won his first cap as a New Brighton player, and last for Northern Ireland, in their 3-1 defeat by England at Goodison Park. Lacey won a total of eighteen caps for Ireland, eight for Northern Ireland and then three for the Republic of Ireland.
2008 - Future red Jonjo Shelvey made his debut for England Under-17's in their goalless European Championships qualifying draw with Armenia in Spain.

1969 - Future reds coach Joe Corrigan won his only cap for England Under-23's as they beat the USSR 2-0 in a friendly at Old Trafford. Emlyn Hughes was also in the side. On the same day, Peter Cormack won his final cap as a Hibernian player as Scotland lost 3-2 to West Germany in a European Championships qualifier in Hamburg, while future red John Toshack played for the senior Welsh side in their 3-1 qualifying defeat by East Germany in Cardiff.

Heading for Olympic gold
1908 - Arthur Berry was in the United Kingdom side that thumped the Netherlands 4-0 in the Semi-final of the Olympics at White City Stadium.

Undefeated at The Dell
1995 - We won 3-1 at Southampton in a Premiership encounter, with Jamie Redknapp adding to a Steve McManaman brace.
1985 - Paul Walsh netted late on as we drew 1-1 there in the Screen Sport Super Cup.

Mixed fortunes at Turf Moor
1898 - We lost 2-1 at Burnley in a top-flight game, with Hugh Morgan bagging our consolation.
1904 - Jack Cox and Robert Robinson were on target as we won 2-0 in a Second Division encounter.

On the move
1993 - Jimmy Case joined Third Division Darlington from Wrexham on a free transfer. He only made one appearance before moving on to Sittingbourne.
2010 - Former substitute keeper Tony Warner signed for Scunthorpe United. He played twice for the Iron before joining Tranmere Rovers three months later.

Alberto again
2003 - Alberto Aquilani won his second and final cap for Italy Under-20's in their 2-0 defeat by Switzerland.
