Debreceni v Liverpool (24/11/2009) - Down Memory Lane
Sunday, 22nd November 2009
YNWA looks back at our four previous encounters with Hungarian opposition as we prepare to face Debreceni VSC in Budapest in our crunch Champions League game on Tuesday. Our previous four visits to Hungary have resulted in a draw and three defeats, with only three goals scored in total. Surprisingly, we have never met Hungarian opposition in any friendlies or other unofficial matches.

First visit
We returned from Honvéd with a goalless draw in the first leg of our Second Round match in the European Cup Winners' Cup in March 1966, winning the return 2-0 to edge a step closer to the Final in our second season in Europe.

Other stalemates
Emlyn Hughes struck a 25-yard equaliser as we drew 1-1 at Ferencvárosi in a Fairs Cup match in September 1970 to go through to the Second Round 2-1 on aggregate. We returned from Hungary with a goalless draw after our European Cup Winners' Cup Second Round meeting with the same side in November 1974, with two penalty shouts on Ray Kennedy waved away. Unfortunately, the 1-1 score from the Anfield first leg put us out on the away goals rule.

Beaten
Ferencvárosi beat us 1-0 with a deflected goal on a snowbound pitch in a Fairs Cup Third Round meeting in November 1967. Unfortunately, we lost the Anfield return by the same score.
