YNWA takes a look back at previous memorable home League meetings as we welcome Birmingham City for their 45th League game at Anfield on Monday, plus a further four while they were still known as Small Heath. We have a good record against them at home, having won 31, drawn ten and been beaten only seven times. However, Rafael Benítez has still to taste victory against the Brummies in the League, home or away.
Most recently
We were held to a frustrating goalless draw in September 2007, with media attention focused on the fact that Fernando Torres was rested for the opening hour. Robbie Fowler came off the bench in our 1-1 draw in February 2006 to make his first appearance in his second spell with the reds shortly after Steven Gerrard had opened the scoring. Robbie even had a late winner correctly ruled out for offside while Daniel Agger made his reds bow in a game that was Rafael Benítez's hundredth in charge. Damien Johnson was sent off for the visitors, who equalised through a Xabi Alonso own goal in the dying minutes to deny us a club record eleventh consecutive clean sheet.
Reds trebles
Gary Gillespie bagged a second-half hat-trick past David Seaman in our 5-0 win against the already relegated City in April 1986, including a penalty. Ian Rush had opened the scoring with Jan Mølby also on target from the spot. Future red Julian Dicks was on the losing side that day. This win kept us on course for our sixteenth League title.
John Toshack bagged a hat-trick as we won 3-1 in October 1975. Harry ‘Smiler' Chambers netted a treble in a 6-2 win in August 1923, with centre-forward Jimmy Walsh nabbing a brace on his reds bow, and Dick Forshaw also on target.
Other red debutants
Kevin Sheedy made his reds bow in a 2-2 draw in February 1981. David Johnson and Phil Neal were on the scoresheet. Tommy Smith debuted in a 5-1 win in May 1963. Gordon Wallace, Ian St. John and Ian Callaghan scored, with Roger Hunt adding a brace.
Bryan Williams made his reds bow as a Cyril Done goal was enough to hand us victory back in March 1949, with amateur left-winger Peter Kippax playing his only reds game. Left-back Ernest Blenkinsop and forward Victor Wright both debuted fifteen years earlier, as Gordon Hodgson scored all four goals in our 4-1 victory. Left-half Jim Bradley made his reds debut in our 2-0 win in September 1905, with Robert Robinson and Joe Hewitt grabbing the goals. Outside-right John McKenna played his only reds game in our 2-0 win in January 1907, with Bill McPherson and Jack Parkinson on target.
Tons up
In November 2003, Steven Gerrard scored from the spot just a minute after Mikael Forssell had opened the scoring for the visitors, before Harry Kewell netted our 150th League goal against the Blues, his fiftieth League goal in England. Emile Heskey then scored a spectacular strike, his hundredth club goal against his future employers as we won 3-1.
Bruce Grobbelaar made his hundredth consecutive appearance in December 1983 as a late Ian Rush strike handed us all the points against a City side including ex-red Howard Gayle, with Ronnie Whelan rattling the crossbar. In April 1933, centre-forward Harold Barton played his hundredth reds game as Gordon Hodgson bagged the only goal of the game.
Yet another draw
We drew the third of three consecutive League games 2-2 in September 2002, as two late Clinton Morrison goals gave City a share of the spoils after Danny Murphy and Steven Gerrard had put us two up. This was the first time in 39 years we had endured such a run of 2-2 draws.
Beaten
Darren Anderton grabbed the only goal of the game in November 2004 as the Blues completed the first part of only their third ever League double over us, as they kept their first Anfield clean sheet since April 1931. Phil Thompson, on his 24th birthday, and Ray Kennedy netted late on in our most recent home defeat by Birmingham prior to that game, as we lost 3-2 in January 1978, having been three behind with just twenty minutes left. This was one of just eleven League defeats we suffered at Anfield throughout the whole of the 1970's.
Ending a run
Ian Callaghan made his 162nd consecutive League appearance in March 1975 as Kevin Keegan grabbed the only goal of the game from the spot. Cally then missed our next League game at Stoke City, before returning in the following fixture.
Nine goal thriller
Vic Wright, Jimmy McDougall and Sam English all netted as we won by the odd goal in nine back in October 1934. Gordon Hodgson bagged a brace, including one from the spot.
Farewell
Jim Smith was on target as we drew 1-1 in October 1929 as John Lindsay played his sixteenth and final reds game.
Off the mark
Forward James Clark netted the first of his eleven reds goals as we lost 2-1 in November 1928.
First visit
Small Heath visited Anfield for the first time back in September 1893, as we lost 3-1, so conceding our first ever goals in the Football League, in our fourth match. Centre-forward David Henderson netted his first reds goal.
