1970 - John Toshack signed from his hometown club Cardiff City for a club record £110,000. He scored 96 goals in 247 reds appearances, helping us to three League titles, two UEFA Cups, the FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before returning to Wales to join Swansea City as Player/Manager in February 1978.

Joe's treble
1905 - Forward Joe Hewitt scored his first of his five reds hat-tricks as we won 5-1 at Middlesbrough. Inside-forward John Carlin added a brace.

Most recently
1992 - Our most recent game on this day came when we beat Sheffield United 3-0 at Anfield in a League Cup Third Round replay, thanks to a Steve McManaman brace and a Mike Marsh penalty. In fact our record on this day is very poor, as we have won just six of our sixteen fixtures.

Double century for Kenny
1980 - Kenny Dalglish played his 200th reds game as we beat Coventry City 2-1 in a League fixture at Anfield, thanks to a David Johnson brace.

Crazy horse stabled
1982 - Second Division Rotherham United lost a Third Round League Cup tie at Anfield under the management of Emlyn Hughes, with Craig Johnston bagging the game's only goal.

European defeat
1969 - We lost 1-0 in the first leg of our Fairs Cup Second Round tie to Portuguese side Vitoria Setubal. We won the second leg 3-2, but went out on the away goals rule.

SteG still a red
2003 - Steven Gerrard signed a new contract to keep him at Anfield until 2007. He remains a red, signing further new contracts to tie him to the club until 2013.

England reds on target
1987 - John Barnes and Peter Beardsley both scored in England's 4-1 European Championships qualifying win in Yugoslavia. Gary Gillespie, Steve Nicol, future reds coach Steve Clarke and ex-red Ian Rush all also featured in qualifiers on the same day.

Mixed fortunes against Rangers
We have twice faced Queens Park Rangers in First Division matches at Loftus Road on this day in history.
1978 - We won 3-1 thanks to goals from Steve Heighway, Ray Kennedy and David Johnson after Peter Eastoe had put the home side in front.
1989 - We lost 3-2 with John Barnes netting a brace for the reds, including one from the spot.

RIP Jack
1955 - Winger Jack Cox died of a heart attack in Walton-on-Thames in Surrey. He signed from Blackpool for £150 in December 1897 and struck eighty times in 361 reds games, helping us to two League titles and the Second Division championship in his nine years at Anfield. He returned to the Seasiders to take over as Player/Manager in May 1909.

Disappointment against the Cockerels
We twice played Tottenham Hotspur in the top flight on this day in the early part of the last century, without scoring a goal.
1911 - We were beaten 2-0 at White Hart Lane.
1922 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield.

Mixed fortunes against the Mancs
We have twice lost to Manchester United on this day in history.
1967 - We went down 2-1 at Anfield with Roger Hunt grabbing our consolation.
1972 - We lost another top-flight meeting 2-0 at Old Trafford.
1944 - However, future reds boss Don Welsh scored a hat-trick as we beat United 5-2 in a Wartime League game at Maine Road, with Willie Fagan and Billy Liddell also netting.

Quasi on the move
1998 - Peter Beardsley signed for Fulham from Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer, following two loan spells at Craven Cottage that year. He racked up a total of 28 appearances for them, scoring seven times.

Brucie in charge
2004 - Bruce Grobbelaar was appointed Manager of South African side Umtata Bush Bucks. He only spent four months there before resigning.

Beating the Irish
1894 - The reds thumped an Irish Internationals side 5-1 at Anfield. Frank Becton bagged a brace with Thomas ‘Tiny' Bradshaw, Fred Geary and Jimmy Ross all also on the scoresheet.

First and last caps
1970 - Future red Peter Cormack won his first cap as a Nottingham Forest player as Scotland beat Denmark 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Hampden Park.
1997 - Dean Saunders won his last cap as a Nottingham Forest player, his 61st in total, as Wales lost 3-0 to Brazil in a friendly in Brasilia. Future reds loanee keeper Paul Jones also featured.
2001 - Nicolas Anelka won his 27th cap, coming off the bench in France's 1-1 draw with Australia in Melbourne, his final appearance while with Paris St. Germain.

Tony on target
2005 - Anthony Le Tallec scored for France Under-21's past Scott Carson in a 1-1 draw with England in the first leg of their European Championships play-off at White Hart Lane. A crowd of 34,494 were at the game, a then record for an England international at this level.

Steven on the move
2005 - Former reserves forward Steven Gillespie rejoined Cheltenham Town on loan from Bristol City. He eventually signed for them permanently in January 2006, and grabbed 28 goals in 83 games for them before moving on to Colchester United in July 2008 for £400,000.
