Terry Mac signs on
1974 - Terry McDermott signed from Newcastle United for £175,000. He struck 81 times in 329 reds games, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. In 1980 he became the first player to win both the PFA and Football Writers' Player Of The Year Awards in the same season. He returned to St. James' Park in September 1982.
Red trebles
2004 - Milan Baroš grabbed his only reds treble, including two penalties, as we beat Crystal Palace 3-2 at Anfield. This was our first ever hat-trick against the Eagles.
1982 - Ian Rush scored a hat-trick as we beat Coventry City 4-0 in a League match at Anfield. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, while Bruce Grobbelaar conceded a penalty but saved the resultant spot-kick taken by Mark Hateley.
Goals galore
1996 - We beat Charlton Athletic 4-1 in a League Cup Third Round replay, with goals from Mark Wright, Jamie Redknapp and a Robbie Fowler brace.
1965 - Northampton Town headed home on the wrong end of a 5-0 scoreline. Ian St. John, Roger Hunt, Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson were all on the scoresheet that day, with Willie Stevenson netting from the spot. The Cobblers were relegated to the Second Division at the end of that season.
Beating Citeh
1937 - We won 3-1 at Maine Road thanks to goals from Phil Taylor, John Shafto and Willie Fagan, with right-back Tommy Cooper playing his hundredth reds game.
1948 - We beat Manchester City 4-2 in another First Division meeting at the same ground, with Phil Taylor again on target. Cyril Done bagged a brace, with Jimmy Payne opening the scoring.
Derby despair
1971 - We lost at Goodison Park with future red David Johnson grabbing the only goal of the game in his first Merseyside derby. Our cause was not helped when Larry Lloyd limped off with a serious knee injury in the first half that kept him out for two months. Referee Clive Thomas awarded an amazing 55 free-kicks in a niggly game.
Dan the man
2006 - Daniel Agger was named Danish Young Player of the Year. He had turned out just sixteen times for the reds by this stage, having arrived from Brøndby IF for £5.8m that January.
Seven for Cyril
1943 - Cyril Done scored an amazing seven goals as we trounced Chester 9-0 in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield. Stan Polk and Andy Beattie struck the others.
Lucas off
2010 - Lucas was sent off in stoppage time of our 2-0 League defeat at Stoke City. Ricardo Fuller put the home side ahead after the break with Kenwyne Jones doubling their lead in the final minute.
Final walk in the park
1920 - We faced Bradford Park Avenue for the sixth and final time when Dick Forshaw struck a brace in a 3-1 win, with Harry Chambers grabbing our first goal.
Young future reds on target for their countries
1994 - Crewe Alexandra's Danny Murphy netted a brace as England Under-18's beat Slovenia 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Wycombe.
1999 - Milan Baroš made his first appearance for the Czech Republic Under-21's, coming on as a substitute in their 3-0 defeat of Greece in a European Championships qualifier in Teplice, and scoring. On the same day, Robbie Keane struck as the Republic of Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by Turkey in the first leg of their Euro 2000 play-off.
Young international debutants
1968 - Alun Evans won his first cap for England Under-23's as they drew 2-2 with the Netherlands in a friendly at St. Andrews.
1963 - Future red David Wilson debuted at the same level as England drew 1-1 with Wales at Ashton Gate.
1990 - Future red David James won his first cap for England Under-21's as they beat the Republic of Ireland 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Cork.
Reds booked
1999 - Jamie Redknapp and ex-reds Paul Ince and Don Hutchison were all booked as Kevin Keegan's England beat Scotland 2-0 at Hampden Park in a Euro 2000 play-off. Young reds striker Michael Owen also played, with Ince making his first appearance as a Middlesbrough player. Future red Yossi Benayoun was the victim of a 5-0 thumping in Tel-Aviv as Denmark won the first leg of their play-off. Meanwhile, fellow future red Fernando Morientes featured as Spain held Brazil to a goalless draw in a friendly in Vigo.
International starts
1991 - Future red Torben Piechnik made his international debut in Denmark's 2-1 Euro '92 qualifying defeat of Northern Ireland in Odense. Ex-red Jim Magilton also played. On the same day, Steve Staunton won his 28th cap for the Republic of Ireland, and first in his first spell at Villa Park, as they won 3-1 in another qualifier in Turkey. Ex-reds John Aldridge and Kevin Sheedy both also featured. Ian Rush and future red Gary McAllister both also played in qualifiers on the same day.
Beating the Irish
1981 - We beat an Irish Internationals XI in a friendly at Tolka Park in Dublin, with Craig Johnston grabbing the only goal of the game.
Igor on his way
2000 - Igor Bišcan was granted a work permit by the Department of Employment, and so was free to join the reds from Dinamo Zagreb when the Croatian season broke for winter at the beginning of December. He moved on to Panathinaikos in July 2005, after three goals in 118 reds games, and helping us to claim two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield, as well as playing a crucial role on the road to Istanbul.
Out on loan
1998 - Reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Celtic on loan. He made three first-team appearances for the Bhoys, keeping just one clean sheet.
Reds in opposition
1985 - Jim Beglin, Mark Lawrenson and ex-reds Michael Robinson and Kevin Sheedy all lined up against Jan Mølby in a World Cup qualifier at Lansdowne Road. Denmark won 4-1 in what was Eoin Hand's last game as Republic of Ireland Manager. Meanwhile, future red Mark Wright played as England were held to a goalless draw at Wembley by Northern Ireland in another qualifier.
