Ged in charge
1998 - Gérard Houllier took over as sole Manager, with Roy Evans leaving after four years in the hot-seat. Uncle Roy's only trophy in charge had been the Coca Cola Cup in 1995, although he led us to four consecutive top four finishes in the League. Ged went on to lead us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before departing in the summer of 2004.
Kenny bows out
1986 - Kenny Dalglish won his 102nd and final Scotland cap as they beat Luxembourg 3-0 in a Euro '88 qualifier at Hampden Park. Alan Hansen won his 25th cap in the same game, while Jan Mølby and future reds Peter Beardsley and Mark Wright also played in qualifiers that day.
Striking against their old club
2000 - Gary McAllister opened the scoring with his first reds goal, against his former club, as we beat Coventry City 4-1 at Anfield, added to by an Emile Heskey brace and a Steven Gerrard strike. Ex-red David Thompson scored City's blistering consolation, while future red Chris Kirkland was in the Sky Blues' goal.
Facing Spurs
2008 - We lost 4-2 at holders Tottenham Hotspur in a Carling Cup Fourth Round tie following a fairly dismal defensive performance. Right-back Stephen Darby made his reds bow while Damien Plessis bagged his only goal for the club, with Sami Hyypiä also on target.
1983 - We were held to a 2-2 top-flight draw at White Hart Lane with Michael Robinson and Ian Rush on target.
Swiss-rolled over
2002 - We drew 3-3 at Basel to crash out of the Champions League at the first group stage. The reds had gone in at the half-time break 3-0 down, but fought back with goals from Danny Murphy, Vladimír Šmicer and Michael Owen, although it was not quite enough.
Tom's treble
1927 - Tom Reid bagged a hat-trick in our 5-2 top-flight win over The Wednesday at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson adding a brace.
Beating PNE
We have twice beaten Preston North End in First Division meetings at Anfield on this day in history.
1898 - Hugh Morgan netted twice as we won 3-1 with George Allan also on the scoresheet.
1910 - Ronald Orr, Jack Parkinson and Sam Bowyer were all on target as we won 3-0.
Derby spoils shared
1921 - Dick Forshaw struck as Everton held us to a draw at Anfield.
Knocked out
1974 - Our first League Cup encounter with Middlesbrough ended in a 1-0 defeat in the Fourth Round at Anfield, with Willie Madden netting in injury time, shortly after Alec Lindsay had his penalty saved by keeper Jim Platt. This came after we had seen off basement side Brentford and Second Division Bristol City.
Tosh the boss again
2004 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Wales for the second time. He led them to 21 victories in 53 games in charge, before leaving by mutual consent in September 2010.
Final caps
1986 - Jim Beglin won his fifteenth and final cap for the Republic of Ireland as they lost 1-0 in a friendly in Poland. John Aldridge was making his seventh and final appearance as an Oxford United player, while future red Ray Houghton and ex-red Kevin Sheedy both also played.
Up against the Gunners
1938 - We met Arsenal at Anfield with Berry Nieuwenhuys grabbing a brace in a 2-2 top-flight draw.
2006 - We made our first trip to the Emirates Stadium, continuing our away day blues by being well beaten, 3-0. Peter Crouch played his 200th club League game.
Luis for his country
2005 - Luis García bagged a treble, his first goals for his country, with Fernando Morientes also on target as Spain thumped future red Martin Škrtel's Slovakia 5-1 in a World Cup play-off in Madrid. His hat-trick consisted of a header, right-foot and left-foot strikes. The other Spanish goal came from future red Fernando Torres who was on target in his third consecutive international. Ex-red Michael Owen grabbed a brace in England's 3-2 friendly defeat of Argentina in Geneva, with Peter Crouch changing the game as a substitute, Paul Konchesky winning his second and final cap and only one as a West Ham United player, and Steven Gerrard and future reds Joe Cole and Maxi Rodríguez also featuring.
Vladimír Šmicer was also on target for his country, as the Czech Republic won the first leg of their World Cup play-off against John Arne Riise's Norway 1-0 in Oslo, with ex-red Milan Baroš also playing. Another ex-red also struck in Helsinki, as Daniel Sjölund netted in Finland's 2-2 friendly draw with Estonia, his first senior goal for his country. Meanwhile, Jan Kromkamp won his final cap as a Villarreal player, and eighth to date, as the Netherlands were beaten 3-1 by Italy in a friendly at the Amsterdam ArenA, with future red Ryan Babel on target. Xabi Alonso, Djibril Cissé, Harry Kewell, future reds Philipp Degen and Dirk Kuyt, and ex-reds Nicolas Anelka and Alou Diarra also played for their countries that day.
Signing on
2009 - Reserves centre-half Daniel Ayala signed a new contract to keep him at Anfield until 2012. He played five senior reds games before moving to Norwich City for £850,000 last August.
Stan on loan
1987 - Young Irish defender Steve Staunton went to Bradford City on loan. He played eleven times for the Bantams, as they narrowly missed out on promotion to the top flight.
Dudek for the Pope
2003 - Jerzy Dudek played for Poland as they beat Italy 3-1 in a friendly match played in Warsaw to commemorate Pope John Paul II's silver jubilee.
Wilkie for Scotland
2003 - Reds youngster Ryan Wilkie made his debut for Scotland Under-18's as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Germany in Herzlake.
