Happy birthday Paddy
1973 - Patrik Berger was born in Prague. He struck 35 times in 196 reds games after his £3.25m capture from Borussia Dortmund following a successful Euro ‘96 with the Czech Republic, coming off the bench to help us claim the FA Cup, UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield in 2001. However, he was later dogged by persistent knee trouble, and allowed to join Premiership new-boys Portsmouth on a free transfer in June 2003. He retired from playing earlier this year.
1981 - Sports Therapist Iván Ortega was born. He joined the reds in the summer of 2009 from Celta de Vigo, but moved on to Chelsea last July.
Red centurions
2007 - Rafael Benítez took charge of the reds for the 200th time as we struggled to break down Fulham at Anfield, before Fernando Torres struck a late opener. Steven Gerrard then converted a penalty to secure a 2-0 victory, Rafa's 115th to date.
1928 - Outside-right Dick Edmed played his hundredth reds game as we won 1-0 at Portsmouth, with forward Bill Salisbury nabbing his first reds goal. Centre-half David Davidson was sent off late in the second half, but we hung on for our first victory at Fratton Park.
League Cup ends
1998 - Roy Evans took charge, jointly, of his last ever game as reds boss as we were beaten 3-1 at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur in a Fourth Round League Cup tie. Steffen Iversen and ex-red John Scales put the visitors two up inside twenty minutes, with Allan Nielsen adding a third after an hour. Michael Owen netted our late consolation.
1981 - Kevin Sheedy struck his second and final reds goal in our 4-1 defeat of Middlesbrough in a Third Round tie, with our other goals coming from Ian Rush and a David Johnson brace. Both Sheedy's reds goals had come in consecutive League Cup fixtures.
2004 - We also entertained Boro in a League Cup fixture, knocking the holders out 2-0 thanks to two late Neil Mellor goals, his first in front of the Kop, as we headed towards our tenth Final in the competition.
Anfield debutants
1984 - Jim Beglin made his reds bow as we were held 1-1 by Southampton, with Ian Rush netting our goal.
1951 - Outside-right Brian Jackson scored on his debut as we drew another top-flight match 1-1 with Bolton Wanderers.
King Kenny's day
1979 - Kenny Dalglish's second goal at Brighton & Hove Albion was his fiftieth for the reds in the League. We won 4-1 with Ray Kennedy and David Johnson also netting.
1971 - He made his Scotland debut while still with Celtic, coming on as a substitute in their 1-0 win over Belgium at Pittodrie. He went on to win a total of 102 caps for his country. On the same day, Emlyn Hughes and Larry Lloyd both played as England were held to a 1-1 draw by Switzerland in another qualifier at Wembley.
1970's departures
1971 - Reds keeper Tommy Lawrence moved over the water to join Tranmere Rovers. The ‘flying pig' had kept goal on 390 occasions since signing on as a professional back in October 1957, helping us to claim two League titles, the FA Charity Shield and the club's first ever FA Cup.
1976 - Midfielder Peter Cormack was sold to Bristol City for £50,000. He had signed from Nottingham Forest for a club record £110,000 in July 1972 and won League title and UEFA Cup winners' medals in his first season, notching a total of 26 goals in 178 reds appearances.

2008 - Steven Gerrard was presented with the Freedom of Knowsley Borough.
An away debut
1894 - Inside-left Davy Hannah debuted in our 3-1 defeat at Stoke, with Neil Kerr grabbing our consolation in what was our first ever visit to the Potters in all competitions. This was the eighth defeat of our opening thirteen top-flight fixtures that campaign as we went on to finish bottom.
Ton up Gary
1990 - Gary Ablett played his hundredth reds game as we beat Luton Town 4-0 at Anfield. Ian Rush struck twice, to add to a Jan Mølby penalty and a goal from Peter Beardsley.
Despair at Leeds Road
We have lost twice at Huddersfield Town in First Division meetings on this day in history.
1934 - We were thumped 8-0, our second biggest ever defeat.
1923 - We lost 3-1 to the reigning champions with Harry Chambers netting our goal.
Most recently
2010 - We were held to a 1-1 draw at Wigan Athletic, with Fernando Torres firing us into an early lead. However, Hugo Rodallega levelled after the break with Steven Gerrard striking the crossbar late on.
Thumping wins
We twice secured convincing First Division wins at Anfield at the beginning of the last century.
1900 - John Walker and Sam Raybould each netted twice as we beat reigning champions Aston Villa 5-1, with Andy McGuigan also scoring.
1906 - Raybould again bagged a brace as Preston North End lost 6-1, with Bill McPherson and Alex Raisbeck also striking twice.
International debuts
2001 - Danny Murphy became the 54th Liverpool player to represent the full England team when he debuted in a 1-1 friendly draw with Sweden at Old Trafford, coming on as a substitute for Nicky Butt. Murphy was joined by three fellow reds, as Jamie Carragher played 85 minutes at left-back, Emile Heskey started alongside Kevin Phillips in attack and was replaced by Teddy Sheringham in the 58th minute, with Robbie Fowler coming on for Phillips at the same time. Robbie was winning his 22nd cap, and final one as a reds player. On the same day, future red Christian Poulsen won his first cap for Denmark as they were held to a 1-1 friendly draw by the Netherlands in Copenhagen.
Meanwhile, Milan Baroš and Vladimír Šmicer both appeared for the Czech Republic as they lost 1-0 in a World Cup play-off in Belgium. This left Baroš needing just one more cap at full international level before he could be granted a work permit to join the reds.
Vlad in charge
2009 - Vladimír Šmicer was appointed Manager of the administrative division for the Czech Republic national team, having announced his retirement from playing the day before.
First and last Irish caps
1987 - Mark Lawrenson won his 39th and final cap for the Republic of Ireland, skippering them as they thumped Israel 5-0 in a friendly at Dalymount Park. Ray Houghton won his thirteenth cap, and first one as a reds player, while ex-red Kevin Sheedy also played.
2001 - Jason McAteer won his first cap as a Sunderland player, and 44th in total, as the Republic of Ireland beat Iran 2-0 in the first leg of their World Cup qualifying play-off at Lansdowne Road, with Robbie Keane bagging his first goal as a Leeds United player. Future red Steve Finnan and ex-red Steve Staunton both also played. Dietmar Hamann, future red Bolo Zenden and ex-red Christian Ziege all also featured in internationals that day.
Honours even with the Mancs
1962 - Ian St. John equalised against Manchester United at Old Trafford although we then trailed 2-1 with just five minutes remaining. Jimmy Melia levelled the scores before Ronnie Moran struck a late free-kick. Unfortunately, there was still time for United to score through Johnny Giles with the last kick of the game as it ended 3-3.
Cox for the League
1900 - Reds winger Jack Cox played for the Football League as they beat an Irish League side 4-2 in Belfast.
Clough for England
1987 - Nigel Clough netted his first England Under-21's goal while winning his tenth cap. Fellow future red Michael Thomas debuted in the same game, as England won 5-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Yugoslavia.
A final cap
1996 - Stéphane Henchoz won his last cap as a Hamburger SV player as Switzerland were beaten 1-0 by Norway in a World Cup qualifier in Bern, with Øyvind Leonhardsen on the winning side. Also in qualifying action that day were Phil Babb, Patrik Berger, Jason McAteer, ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal and future reds Vladimír Šmicer and Rigobert Song.
Also on the move
2001 - Ex-reserves forward Sean Friars signed for Carlisle United from Ipswich Town on a monthly contract. He only made one senior appearance for the Blues.
2005 - Former second string keeper Ian Dunbavin joined Scarborough on loan from Halifax Town. He played fourteen Conference games for them, and is now playing for Accrington Stanley in League Two.
