In advance of Wednesday evening's Champions League fixture against PSV Eindhoven at Anfield, YNWA looks at the careers of some of those players have represented both sides over the years.
Current double agent
Jan Kromkamp joined PSV Eindhoven in August 2006 after just eight months at Anfield, in which time he had made eighteen first-team appearances, helping us to claim the FA Cup back in Cardiff. He had arrived in L4 in a swap deal with Villarreal for Josemi. Kromkamp has so far turned out 54 times for the Dutch champions, including three of the four encounters with the reds in this competition two seasons ago.
The mad Dutchman
Erik Meijer moved to PSV Eindhoven from MVV Maastricht for £1.2m in 1994. He grabbed thirteen goals in 27 games for them before moving to Germany to sign for KFC Uerdingen 05 in time for the 1995/96 season. Erik joined the reds on a Bosman free transfer from Bayer 04 Leverkusen in July 1999, but could only make 27 appearances. He only found the back of the net twice for us, when he grabbed a brace in a 5-1 League Cup Second Round first leg win at Hull City, his first start for the club. However, he was a popular figure amongst reds fans despite his lack of success at Anfield, due to his never-say-die attitude and infectious enthusiasm, even in reserves outings. He had a short loan spell with Preston North End towards the end of his time with the reds, before returning to Germany to join Hamburger SV on a free transfer in December 2000.
Bolo
Boudewijn Zenden started his career at the Philips Stadion, helping them to claim the Dutch Cup in 1996 and the League title the following season. He struck 32 goals in 109 Eredivisie games for the Boeren before joining the Dutch contingent at Barcelona under Louis van Gaal in 1998. He signed on at Anfield on a free transfer in July 2005 after his one-year contract with Middlesbrough had expired. He notched twice in 47 senior reds games, as injury interrupted his two seasons at Anfield, although he has featured in all four meetings with his former employers during 2006/07. However, he helped us to claim the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield in his brief time with the reds.
Also at the back
Abel Xavier spent the 1998/99 season with PSV Eindhoven, grabbing two goals in nineteen League games and winning a medal in their Dutch Super Cup triumph. He moved directly across the park to join the reds from Everton for £800,000 in January 2002 and netted twice in 21 reds games, of which we only lost three, including on his debut in a 6-0 thumping of Ipswich Town at Portman Road. His next stop was Hannover 96 in February 2004 having been released, and then played twenty times for Middlesbrough while also being found guilty of breaching UEFA's anti-doping regulations and was last seen playing with David Beckham for LA Galaxy.
Glenn Hysén was Sweden's Player of the Year in 1983, which helped earn him a move to PSV, from where he went on to Fiorentina after twelve goals in 45 Eredivisie outings. He signed for the reds from the Italian club for £600,000 in June 1989. He bagged three goals in 93 reds games, helping us to claim the FA Charity Shield and League title in his first season. He moved back to Sweden to join GAIS in May 1992.
