In advance of Wednesday evening's Champions League meeting with PSV Eindhoven, YNWA looks at our previous visitors from the Netherlands over the years, as well as our four prior meetings with PSV to date.
Last time around
We won 3-0 at the Philips Stadion in the first leg of our Champions League Quarter-final in April 2007, with Steven Gerrard, John Arne Riise and Peter Crouch bagging the goals that gave us a healthy advantage. Jamie Carragher played his 58th game in the European Cup, overtaking Phil Neal's club record in the process. Meanwhile, Gerrard's fifteenth goal in the competition took him past Ian Rush to become our record goalscorer in Europe's premier club competition, while Riise's strike was his 31st and final one for the club.
Less happily, Fabio Aurélio ruptured his Achilles tendon, ruling him out for until the following September. Dirk Kuyt seemingly got himself booked at the end of the game by obstructing a free-kick to guarantee he would be banned for second leg at Anfield and ensure a clean slate for the Semi-final.
Peter Crouch bagged the only goal from two yards out in the second leg. This was his sixth European strike of the campaign, while teenager Dirk Marcellis was somewhat unfortunately dismissed on his debut.
In the group stage
We met PSV in a competitive fixture for the first time in September 2006, with Dirk Kuyt making his first return to his homeland and Jan Kromkamp and Bolo Zenden both featuring against their former club. The game ended goalless, with Steven Gerrard coming closest to breaking the deadlock when he struck the inside of a post late on.
The Anfield return in November resulted in a 2-0 victory with Steven Gerrard striking just after the hour mark, the first time they had conceded in 714 minutes, to draw him level with Ian Rush as our top European Cup goalscorer on fourteen. Peter Crouch grabbed a late second as we ensured top spot in the group with a game to spare.
Our first encounter with PSV
A testimonial was held in honour of Jan Mølby in August 1996. PSV Eindhoven provided the opposition, and left Anfield having won 3-2 with Mølby playing just under an hour. Stan Collymore was on target with Stig Inge Bjørnebye also heading a goal after we had gone three goals behind, while the eventual winning goal came from second half substitute Bolo Zenden!
In yellow
We came from behind twice as we were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Ajax in the European Cup in December 1966, with ‘Sir' Roger Hunt and the legendary Johan Cruyff scoring twice each, as we crashed out at the Second Round stage 7-3 on aggregate. Peter Thompson and Geoff Strong had both hit the woodwork before the scoring began. This was the first time we had ever played in a yellow kit.
Other Dutch visitors
A thrilling night at Anfield in November 1981 ended in a 3-2 defeat of the previous season's losing UEFA Cup Finalists AZ'67 Alkmaar, as we reached the Third Round of the European Cup 5-4 on aggregate. The Dutch champions equalised twice after a Terry McDermott penalty and an Ian Rush strike before Alan Hansen won it with five minutes to go. Alkmaar's second equaliser came from a 25-yard shot from future Nottingham Forest star Johnny Metgod that bounced down from the crossbar and onto Phil Thompson's foot for a bizarre own goal.
Michael Owen nabbed the only goal of the game in December 2002 as we progressed past Vitesse Arnhem in the UEFA Cup Third Round 2-0 on aggregate.
