Atletico Madrid v Liverpool (22/10/2008) - Meet the Referee
Monday, 20th October 2008
Claus Bo Larsen of Denmark will referee next Champions League match in Spain against Athletico Madrid.

The 42-year old is a customs clearance manager by trade and lives with his wife in Odense. He has been on the FIFA list since 1996 but has yet to officiate in a major tournament mainly due to Kim Milton Neilsen who was always chosen as Denmark's official. He was though chosen in the first group of European referees for last years World Cup, but was one of six referees that never made the final stage.

This will be his ninth season refereeing in the Champions League, and our paths have only ever crossed twice before, but both games ended in a Liverpool defeat, 1-0 at Monaco in November 2004 and 2-1 at Besiktas last season. Last season was his best in the Champions League as he refereed a total of 5 games and got as far as the Quarter-Final stage.

He speaks English and German and lists table tennis as one of his hobbies away from football.

2004 was a busiest year for Larsen so far, he was one of three European based referees who were chosen to officiate in Stage 2 of the OFC Nations Cup and World Cup qualifying matches. Then he was in Athens for the Olympic Games and was fourth official for the Gold Medal Match as Argentina beat Paraguay 1-0.

In December last year he took charge of the Club World Cup game between ES Sahel and Boca Juniors in Toyko, a game that included ex-red Gabriel Paletta in the Boca defence.

This year he refereed the UEFA Super Cup Final in Monaco as Zenit St. Petersburg beat Manchester United 2-1.

He lists the Danish Cup Final between Brondby and Copenhagen in 1998 as the highlight of his career so far.

His assistants are Henrik Sonderby and Anders Norrestrand with Emil Laursen as the fourth official.
