Liverpool v West Bromwich Albion (08/11/2008) - Down Memory Lane
Thursday, 6th November 2008
YNWA takes a look back at previous memorable home meetings as we prepare to entertain West Bromwich Albion for the 58th time in the League on Saturday evening. We have a pretty good record against them at Anfield, having won 31, drawn seventeen and been beaten nine times.

Crouchie again
Peter Crouch headed our hundredth League goal against Albion in December 2005 as we won 1-0 to secure our tenth consecutive League victory. This was the third consecutive game that Crouchie had notched in, inside a week.

Rare strikes
In September 2004, Steve Finnan scored his only reds goal and Luis García bagged the first of his thirty strikes in what was our 2,000th home League game. Steven Gerrard was also on target in a 3-0 victory, our fiftieth League defeat of Albion. In February 1979, Ally Brown scored one of only four opposition goals in the League at Anfield that season. However, goals from Kenny Dalglish and David Fairclough ensured that we won 2-1.

4-1 victories
The Baggies paid their last visit to Anfield before their recent returns to the Premiership in November 1985, but left on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline, with Steve Nicol, Jan Mølby, Mark Lawrenson and Paul Walsh all netting. Garth Crooks struck for the Baggies, their most recent goal at Anfield. Roger Hunt scored all four of our goals as we triumphed by the same score in January 1968. Gordon Hodgson scored a hat-trick in March 1932, with Gordon Gunson also scoring.

Reds debutants galore
Defender Richard Money made his reds bow in our 4-0 win in September 1980. Terry McDermott scored from the spot after Bryan Robson had punched the ball over the bar, with David Fairclough bagging a brace and Graeme Souness also on target. In August 1979, centre-half Colin Irwin made his debut in our 3-1 victory. David Johnson bagged a brace, with Terry McDermott also on the scoresheet. This was our 1,500th home League game. Chris Lawler made his reds debut in March 1963 as we drew our third consecutive League game 2-2, with Roger Hunt netting and Ronnie Moran scoring from the spot.

Full-back Frank Lock and forward John Evans, both newly signed from Charlton Athletic, made their reds bows in a goalless draw on Boxing Day 1953. Defender Jimmy ‘Parson' Jackson debuted in a 2-0 win in November 1925, with Cyril Oxley grabbing both the goals. Forward Sam Raybould made his reds bow as we won 2-0 in January 1900, thanks to a brace from Hugh Morgan.

The pig lands
Keeper Tommy Lawrence played in his 116th consecutive League appearance in January 1970, with Chris Lawler notching in a 1-1 draw. He then lost his place to Ray Clemence.

More big wins
Berry Nieuwenhuys, Gordon Hodgson and Fred Howe all scored in a 5-0 thumping of the Baggies in September 1935, with Lance Carr bagging a brace. Full-back Jim Harley made his debut in this game. 35 years earlier, Archie Goldie, John Walker and Tom Robertson were all on target as we triumphed by the same score, to add to a brace from Sam Raybould.

Dismissed
Russell Hoult became the first Baggies keeper to be sent off in a League game for 107 years in September 2002. Joe Murphy made his debut as a replacement, and saved Michael Owen's resulting penalty. However, Milan Baroš and John Arne Riise scored in our 2-0 win.
