In advance of our friendly at Ibrox on Saturday, YNWA looks at the careers of those who have represented both Rangers and the mighty reds.
Most recently
Alex Miller struck thirty times in 306 games for Rangers between 1967 and 1982, after signing from Clydebank Strollers. His legendary status in Glasgow is partly due to playing in the 1972 League Cup Final with a broken jaw. He became a scout under Gérard Houllier, before being given a first-team role by Rafael Benítez. He left the club at the end of last season to take over as Manager of JEF United Ichihara Chiba in Japan.
Grégory Vignal signed from Montpellier for £500,000 in September 2000 but failed to establish himself at Anfield, spending much of his time out on loan in France, Spain and Scotland. He signed for Portsmouth in July 2005 after being released from Anfield following just fourteen starts and six substitute appearances. However, he has since continued his nomadic career, netting three times in 42 games for Rangers while on loan from the reds in 2004/05, helping them to claim the League Cup and the title at the last gasp.
Souness in charge
Graeme Souness was appointed Rangers' first player-manager in April 1986, signing from Sampdoria for a fee of £300,000 and taking over from Jock Wallace. He quickly revolutionised the club, winning the League and League Cup in his first season. He then added two more of each trophy before returning to Anfield to take over as Manager in April 1991.
He had won five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields in six years as a reds player, striking 55 times in 359 outings. His time in the hot seat was considerably less successful, with just one FA Cup triumph, along with the controversial dismantling of the legendary Boot Room, and his infamous liaison with a certain tabloid newspaper.
Signed by Souey
Mark Everton Walters joined Rangers from Aston Villa for £550,000 on New Year's Eve in 1987. He spent four seasons at Ibrox, netting 51 times in 143 games, before moving to Anfield in August 1991 to rejoin Graeme Souness for a £1.25m fee. He had been the first black player to turn out for the Ibrox side, and helped them to claim three titles and two League Cups.
His most famous of 124 games in a red shirt came when he inspired a UEFA Cup comeback against Auxerre in 1991. He also scored the crucial second goal in our defeat of Manchester United that handed the title to Leeds United earlier the following year, one of his nineteen reds strikes. He could not reproduce his Scottish success at Anfield, and eventually moved to Southampton in January 1996.
Nigel Spackman was signed for Rangers by Graeme Souness in November 1989, arriving from Queens Park Rangers for £500,000. He spent three years at Ibrox, helping them to three straight League titles. He had left Anfield for the same fee just nine months earlier, after losing his place to Ronnie Whelan. He had made 63 first-team appearances, winning a League title medal in his one full season at Anfield, following his £400,000 capture from Chelsea two years earlier.
Eighties reds
Israeli defender Avi Cohen only made 24 appearances during his Anfield career after signing for £200,000 from Maccabi Tel-Aviv in July 1979, with his most memorable game coming in May 1980 as we clinched our twelfth League title. He put through his own net before scoring his only reds goal at the same end in the second half, as we beat Aston Villa 4-1. He played seven League games in 1987/88 after a second spell with Maccabi Tel-Aviv.
Kevin MacDonald played 64 reds games, scoring five times, following his £400,000 capture from Leicester City in November 1984. He helped us to the League and FA Cup double in 1986, with skipper Alan Hansen calling him "far and away our most influential player." He played three League games while on loan with Rangers in 1988/89 after failing to re-establish himself at Anfield following a broken leg. He returned to his old club Leicester City in 1988.
Up front
Inside-right George Livingstone signed from Celtic in May 1902, having been a losing Scottish Cup Finalist earlier that month, and bagged four goals in 32 games the following season. He moved on to Manchester City after just one year at Anfield, going on to help them to claim the FA Cup in 1904. He then moved to Rangers in January 1907, staying until 1909 when he signed for Manchester United. He returned to Ibrox in 1920 as a Trainer.
Inside-left Archie McPherson signed from Rangers in November 1929 and bagged nineteen goals in 133 reds games as we endured a barren spell at the start of the 1930's. He later appeared in the FA Cup Final for Sheffield United, as they lost to Arsenal at Wembley in 1936. Centre-forward Jim Smith joined Rangers from Ayr United, and then joined the reds in September 1929 for £5,500. He bagged 38 goals in 62 outings, before signing for Tunbridge Wells Rangers in July 1932.
Double agents of yore
Glasgow-born defender James Cameron signed on a free transfer from Rangers in May 1894, and made just four first-team appearances before moving to Pollokshields the following year. Winger John McDonald netted four times in 81 reds games after signing from Rangers in May 1909. He left three years later to sign for Newcastle United. Glaswegian centre-half Robert Neill was probably our shortest ever player in that position, at five foot four inches. He netted three times in 27 times for the reds, before winning the League and Cup with Rangers at the turn of the century.
Full-back David Murray crossed Stanley Park in August 1904 having previously been at Ibrox. He only made fifteen reds appearances before moving to Hull City in 1905. John Bovill started his career with Rangers and joined the reds from Chesterfield Town in April 1911, and went on to bag seven goals in 29 reds games before leaving for Linfield three years later. Inside-forward Bill McPherson signed from St. Mirren in 1906 and nabbed sixteen goals in 55 games, returning north of the border to sign for the Gers in 1908. Other double agents include Bill Shankly's uncle Bob.
