YNWA takes a look back at our previous visitors from Belgium as we prepare to entertain Standard de Liège on Wednesday evening in the crucial second leg of our Champions League qualifier.
Previously against les Rouches
We beat Standard de Liège 3-1 at Anfield in December 1965, in our first game of a European Cup Winners' Cup campaign that saw us reach the Final in only our second season of European football. Chris Lawler struck a brace that night, with Peter Thompson also netting in a very bad-tempered game. We won the return 2-1 in Belgium and eventually got to the Final at Hampden Park.
UEFA Cup glory
Jimmy Case became our first substitute to score in a cup final in April 1976, as we beat Club Brugge 3-2 at Anfield in the first leg of the UEFA Cup Final, despite being 2-0 down after only twelve minutes. Ray Kennedy also scored, with Kevin Keegan netting a penalty, and we drew the return match 1-1 to clinch the trophy for a second time.
In the red
We played our first European game in an all-red strip in November 1964, beating Belgian champions RSC Anderlecht 3-0 at Anfield in a European Cup Second Round first leg tie, thanks to goals from Ian St. John, Roger Hunt and Ron Yeats, who notched his first goal at Anfield. We won the second leg 1-0 and made it as far as the Semi-final, in our first season of continental competition.
Luis sets a new record
Luis García became our all-time top scorer in the new Champions League format with seven strikes in November 2005, heading a goal as we beat RSC Anderlecht 3-0 at Anfield, who had Nenad Ještrovic sent off five minutes after coming on as a substitute for racially abusing Momo Sissoko. Fernando Morientes and Djibril Cissé were also on target that night. Steven Gerrard has since surpassed his record in the Champions League proper.
European disappointment
We beat European Cup Winners' Cup holders RSC Anderlecht 2-1 in thick fog at in December 1978, in the second leg of our UEFA Super Cup tie, which meant that we lost out 4-3 on aggregate. Emlyn Hughes and David Fairclough struck on the night. Steve Ogrizovic played instead of Ray Clemence, who was on the bench, missing his first European fixture for the reds since November 1969 - a run of 67 consecutive appearances in continental competition.
For Clem
A testimonial match for Ray Clemence was staged at Anfield in May 1980, as the reds lost 8-6 to RSC Anderlecht, with defender Richard Money bagging his first reds goal. Kevin Keegan returned to score for the reds that night, with Howard Gayle grabbing a brace and Clem himself and ex-red Joey Jones also on the scoresheet.
