YNWA takes a look back at memorable past League encounters at home as Middlesbrough make their 68th trip to Anfield in the League on Saturday. So far our record reads 37 wins, seventeen draws and thirteen defeats. Our recent record is exceptional, as we are undefeated in the last twenty Anfield League meetings.
Most recently
Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick to pass twenty goals for the season after we had fallen behind last February. We went on to win 3-2, with Jérémie Aliadière sent off for the visitors for slapping Javier Mascherano.
We won 2-0 in April 2007, when Steven Gerrard grabbed two goals, including a penalty. Chris Riggott was sent off as Fernando Morientes bagged a brace in a 2-0 victory in December 2005. This was our tenth straight game without conceding a goal, equalling the record from the 1987/88 season. Eight months earlier, John Arne Riise had played his 200th reds game as Steven Gerrard struck the equaliser in a 1-1 draw.
Beaten
Boro won 2-0 in March 1976, their most recent League win at Anfield, and one of just eleven League defeats we suffered at home in the whole of the 1970's. Their goals came from Terry Cooper and John Hickton. Future reds Graeme Souness and Phil Boersma were both in the Boro side that day.
Trebles galore
In December 1996, Robbie Fowler grabbed four in a 5-1 thumping, with the opener coming after just 29 seconds and the second being his hundredth reds goal. Our other goal was Stig Inge Bjørnebye's fourth and final reds strike. Fowler reached his century in 165 games, one quicker than Ian Rush, and celebrated one of his goals by revealing a t-shirt with the hand-written slogan "God's job's a good un" on it! In February 1962, Roger Hunt bagged his fifth hat-trick of the season in another 5-1 victory, with Ian St. John adding a brace. In March 1934, Gordon Hodgson scored three in our 6-2 win, one of his seventeen reds trebles, with Sam English, with a brace, and Harold Taylor also on the scoresheet.
In November 1921, Danny Shone bagged a treble in our 4-0 victory, with Tommy Lucas adding a penalty. In April 1907, Alf Common grabbed a hat-trick for the Teesiders in their 4-2 win, our eighth home League defeat of the season, a club record. Robert Blanthorne struck his only reds goal in his second and final appearance, with Arthur Goddard also netting. In November 1902, Sam Raybould netted a hat-trick in our first ever meeting with Boro, a 5-0 victory. Edgar Chadwick and Jack Cox were also on target.
A momentous fixture for Rushie
In April 1996, Ian Rush was applauded onto the pitch by a ‘guard of honour' of both teams before his last ever match at Anfield. Stan Collymore scored the only goal of the game.
In November 1992, we won 4-1 thanks to a brace from Ronnie Rosenthal, and goals from Steve McManaman and Ian Rush. Rushie's strike was his 200th League goal, including fourteen for Chester, and came from a Paul Stewart cross! Boro scored from a Jimmy Phillips penalty, the first we had conceded in the Premier League. Six years earlier, Ian scored his first goal since his return from Juventus in our 3-0 win, with John Aldridge and Peter Beardsley also netting.
Big wins
We won 4-0 in both October 1948 and December 1979, with Terry McDermott, Alan Hansen, David Johnson and Ray Kennedy netting in the latter game, and Jack Balmer and Albert Stubbins on target in the former, with Billy Liddell converting a penalty and William Whitaker putting through his own net. Gordon Gunson, Jim Smith and Tom Morrison were all on target as we triumphed 7-2 in September 1931, with Harold Barton and Gordon Hodgson netting twice each.
Another stalemate
In February 2003, John Arne Riise netted after Geremi's free-kick in our fifth consecutive League draw at Anfield that season. Gérard Houllier missed the game with gastroenteritis. Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier's son was our mascot.
Reds debutants
In January 1978, Kevin Kewley played his only reds game, as a substitute, as goals from David Johnson and Steve Heighway gave us a 2-0 win. In April 1954, Tony Rowley netted on his reds debut as we won 4-1, with Sammy Smyth bagging a brace and Billy Liddell also on target. In March 1912, Billy Lacey made the first of his 259 reds appearances in a 1-1 draw, following his move across Stanley Park. Tom Miller bagged our goal.
Keeper Russell Crossley made his reds bow in a goalless draw in October 1950. Ned Barkas made his reds debut in our 3-1 win in January 1931. Gordon Hodgson struck a brace, with Robert Done also on target.
Red beginnings and endings
Danny Murphy struck from the spot in our 2-0 win in May 2004, his 44th and final reds goal, with Emile Heskey also on target. This continued his 100% record in penalties for us, with his eighth successful conversion. Centre-back Laurie Hughes scored an own goal as we lost 1-0 in September 1946, in our first home game of the first post-war season.
Boro runs at Anfield
Boro won their fifth straight League game in L4 in December 1960. Kevin Lewis bagged a brace, with Alan A'Court also on the scoresheet with his fiftieth reds goal as we lost 4-3. It was three League wins in a row at Anfield in March 1909, with Jim Harrop scoring as we lost 2-1.
Dom off
Dominic Matteo was sent off in our 3-1 win in February 1999. Michael Owen, Vegard Heggem and Paul Ince were on the scoresheet.
