YNWA takes a look back at the one player known to have represented both sides as we prepare to host Standard de Liège in the second leg of our Champions League qualifier on Wednesday evening.
Oh Ronnie, Ronnie
Ronnie Rosenthal spent eleven years with Maccabi Haifa since the age of eleven. He broke into their first team aged just sixteen, grabbing a brace on his debut. He helped them to promotion in 1980, and to their first ever League title four years later, and winning eleven senior caps while still in Israel.
He then moved to Belgium to join Club Brugge, helping them to claim the League title and reach the UEFA Cup Semi-finals, before moving to Standard de Liège in 1988, spending some time on loan with Luton Town in early 1990 then arriving at Anfield in another loan deal in March of that year. He signed on permanently for the reds for £1m in June 1990, after seven goals in eight games as we claimed our most recent Championship.
He was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £250,000 in January 1994, after a total of 22 goals in 97 reds games. He stayed at White Hart Lane for three and a half years, helping them to an FA Cup win at Anfield in March 1995. He then joined Watford on a free transfer in August 1997, bagging eleven goals in 39 games for the Hornets and helping them back into the top flight before having to return due to injury.
He played a total of 55 international appearances during his career, scoring ten times. He is now working as a football consultant.
