Liverpool v Lazio (08/08/2008) - Double Agents
Wednesday, 6th August 2008
As we prepare to entertain S.S. Lazio for the second time on Friday, YNWA looks back at the career of the only player known to have appeared for both clubs.

Karlheinz Riedle started his senior career at Augsburg. He then moved to SV Blau-Weiß Berlin in 1986, who had just been promoted to the Bundesliga. However, they finished bottom and Riedle left for SV Werder Bremen the following summer.

He scored eighteen goals in 33 games in his first season as Bremen won the League title for only the second time ever. He also made his debut for West Germany that season. Riedle then helped them to two German Cup finals in 1989 and 1990, although they lost them both. He struck a total of 24 goals in 87 League games.

After helping his country to claim the World Cup in 1990, he moved to S.S. Lazio for £5.5m, staying in Rome for three years and notching thirty times in 84 Serie A outings. He then returned to his homeland to join Borussia Dortmund, helping them to claim back-to-back Bundesliga titles and bagging a brace as they beat Juventus in the Champions League Final in 1997.

He arrived at Anfield for £1.8m in July 1997, scoring fifteen times in 76 reds games. He had a great influence on the young Michael Owen, before leaving Anfield for Fulham in a £200,000 deal in September 1999. He also spent time as their Caretaker Manager at Craven Cottage during 1999/00, and retired from the game in 2001. He is now a sports commentator working in Switzerland.
