Vålerenga v Liverpool (05/08/2008) - Down Memory Lane
Sunday, 3rd August 2008
YNWA takes a look back at our three previous friendly meetings with Vålerenga as we prepare for our final overseas pre-season friendly on Tuesday. So far we have won two and drawn the other, failing to keep a clean sheet in any of these matches, all but one of which have taken place at the Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo.

Aldo's treble
John Aldridge netted a hat-trick, including a penalty, in our 4-1 victory at Vålerenga's old ground, the Bislett Stadion, in August 1987. Paul Walsh grabbed the other goal.

Most recently
We lost a penalty shoot-out 4-2 in August 2000, following a 1-1 draw, with Vladimír Šmicer on the scoresheet. Dietmar Hamann and Titi Camara both missed their kicks, while Gary McAllister and Nick Barmby were successful.

Another thumping win
Karlheinz Riedle, Dietmar Hamann and Erik Meijer all netted in our 4-1 win in July 1999, with the scoring completed by an own goal.

Other matches at the Ullevaal
We beat Rosenborg BK 3-2 in the Norway Cup at the Ullevaal Stadion in August 1991, with Dean Saunders adding a brace to a Jan Mølby penalty.

England international Paul Stewart made his reds bow in a 1-0 defeat to Rosenborg BK at the same stadium in July 1992. His time at Anfield was a failure, as he scored just three times in 42 appearances in nearly four seasons. He left for Sunderland on a free transfer in March 1996. Six years later, we lost 2-0 to the same side.

Ian Rush netted our consolation as we lost 3-1 to a Norway XI in the Norway Cup Festival 94 in August 1994, while we lost the same fixture 3-0 a year later.

Finally, we played a Norway XI in the Ullevaal on the last day in July in consecutive years in the 1990's. Robbie Fowler scored as we drew 1-1 in 1996 with the match being decided on a penalty shoot-out. Welsh reserves striker Lee Jones missed the fifth and final spot-kick, as we lost 5-4. The following year we won 3-1, thanks to a brace from Robbie Fowler and a strike from the young Michael Owen.
