Birmingham City v Liverpool (26/04/2008) - Down Memory Lane
Thursday, 24th April 2008
YNWA takes a look back at some memorable past away League encounters as we prepare to make our 48th League trip to Birmingham City on Saturday, including four when they were known as Small Heath. So far our record reads fifteen wins, eleven draws and 21 defeats.

Most recently
We were held to a 2-2 draw in September 2005, our most recent League visit to St. Andrews. Neil Kilkenny was sent off for the home side on his debut, one of fifteen opposition players dismissed against the reds that season. Our goals came from Luis García and a Djibril Cissé penalty, with Stephen Warnock scoring an own goal.

We lost 2-0 seven months earlier after an abject performance, with Walter Pandiani scoring from the spot after Sami Hyypiä, who was playing his 300th reds game, was judged to have fouled ex-red Emile Heskey. Julian Gray added the second, his first goal for the club.

Beginnings and ends
Emile Heskey scored his final reds goal in May 2004 as we equalled our best ever score at St. Andrews to win 3-0, with Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard also on target. Kenny Cunningham was sent off for City with the score at 2-0.

Steve Nicol made his reds debut in a goalless draw in August 1982, the first time we had failed to score in ten visits to St. Andrews. This was the first of his 468 reds appearances. Legendary right-back Ephraim Longworth played his 371st and final reds game as we lost 2-0 in April 1928. This came more than seventeen and a half years after his debut!

We lost 2-1 at Muntz Street in September 1906 with Jack Cox grabbing our consolation, while full-back Percy Saul made his reds bow. Forward Jack Parkinson scored on his reds bow as we beat Small Heath 2-1 in October 1903, with left-half George Fleming also on the scoresheet, from the spot

Milestone matches
Sami Hyypiä played his 200th reds game as we lost 2-1 in February 2003, with Michael Owen netting his first goal for a month. Muhammad Ali was in the crowd to watch us play out a goalless draw in May 1984.

In November 1985, we won 2-0 on our last League trip for nearly twenty years, with goals from Ian Rush and Paul Walsh. Ian Rush scored the only goal of the game in May 1982, as we moved ever closer to clinching our thirteenth League title.

Thumping wins
Our 3-0 victory in September 1978 was our biggest ever win at St. Andrews, thanks to a brace from Graeme Souness and a goal from Alan Kennedy.

We suffered our worst ever defeat in all competitions back in December 1954, being trounced 9-1 by a Birmingham side on their way to the Second Division title, whilst we floundered in mid-table after relegation from the top flight the season before. Eddie Brown netted a treble that day. City were really on a roll, as they had beaten Port Vale 7-2 in their previous home game. Billy Liddell grabbed our consolation that day.

We suffered another heavy defeat at St. Andrews back in February 1937, as we went down 5-0. This was a particularly disappointing result, as City were struggling against relegation from the First Division, and only just stayed up.

Treble against
Joe Bradford bagged a hat-trick for City in their 5-2 win back in November 1924, with Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw on target for the away side and left-winger William Chalmers making his reds bow.

New grounds for the reds
Joe Hewitt netted as our first visit to Birmingham's new St. Andrews ground ended 1-1 in January 1908. Our first ever meeting was at Muntz Street in October 1893. We won this Second Division fixture 4-3, with Patrick Gordon, Jimmy Stott, David Henderson and Hugh McQueen on the scoresheet.
