YNWA takes a look back at memorable away League meetings of the past as we prepare to visit Fulham on Saturday for only our 21st League trip. We have a reasonable away League record in West London against the Cottagers, with seven wins, six draws and seven defeats so far.
Most recently
The reds were dismal in October 2004 in a first half that saw Luis Boa Morte put Fulham 2-0 up. We drew level after the break thanks to a Zat Knight own goal and a close-range Milan Baroš strike, before Josemi was sent off for a second caution. Xabi Alonso, who had replaced the hapless Salif Diao at half time, then bagged his first reds goal, with the 4-2 win completed by Igor Bišcan's glorious strike, his first League goal. All together now: "2-0, 4-2 up, Igor Bišcan wrapped it up."
Papa Bouba Diop was sent off for the home side last May, as Craig Bellamy and Gabriel Paletta both made their final appearances for the reds in our 1-0 defeat that came just four days after we had seen off Chelsea to reach Athens. Harry Kewell played his first game since the previous season's FA Cup Final, while young left-back Emiliano Insúa played his second and most recent reds game. We also lost in October 2005, with ex-reds reserve Tony Warner coming on for Mark Crossley as a second-half substitute in this 2-0 reverse.
Other recent visits
We won 2-1 at Loftus Road in November 2003, with Fulham old boy Steve Finnan setting Emile Heskey up for the opener, our 300th away goal in the Premier League. Our winner came when Danny Murphy netted his fiftieth career League goal, converting from the spot after Florent Sinama-Pongolle was brought down in the area, shortly after he had been assaulted by Luis Boa Morte in the centre circle, who was dismissed. Vladimír Šmicer played his hundredth League game.
Our visit to Loftus Road a year earlier, Fulham's temporary home, resulted in a 3-2 defeat, towards the beginning of that season's horrible run of form. Dietmar Hamann's bullet free-kick added to a Milan Baroš strike, but this was not enough for any of the points, despite Alain Goma's sending off.
Seeing red
Ian St. John was dismissed for punching the home side's Mark Pearson as we lost 2-0 in February 1966.
Reds debutants
Geoff Strong made his reds bow in our 1-1 draw in November 1964. Ian Callaghan netted our goal. Centre-half Joe Cadden's reds debut came in our 2-1 defeat in September 1950. Billy Liddell netted our consolation.
Liddell in and out
Louis Bimpson scored the only goal of the game in October 1958, as the Liverpool Echo reported that Billy Liddell was dropped for the first time in his reds career. Our first League trip to Craven Cottage came nine years earlier, following three visits in the FA Cup, and resulted in a 1-0 win, with Liddell grabbing the goal.
Reg's treble
Roy Dwight, Elton John's cousin, scored a hat-trick for Fulham as they won 3-1 in April 1956, with Billy Liddell again on the scoresheet for the reds against the Cottagers.
Wright's last outing
In March 2002, Stephen Wright played his 21st and final game before his summer switch to Sunderland as we won 2-0. Nicolas Anelka and Jari Litmanen netted in a game whose highlight was possibly Stéphane Henchoz's stunning last-ditch tackle on Steve Marlet with the score at 1-0.
