Steven Gerrard will tomorrow evening become Liverpool's joint #3 all-time record appearance holder in European competition, assuming he plays in our Champions League quarter-final second leg against Arsenal at Anfield. This will be his 89th game in continental competition for Liverpool and he has already helped us to claim three European trophies. However, he is currently only number 22 in terms of games in all competitions, and is probably two seasons away from breaking into the Top 10.
Stevie's 88 European games to date include 63 in the Champions League, 24 in the UEFA Cup, and one UEFA Super Cup fixture. His first European appearance came back in December 1998 when he played in our 1-0 defeat to Celta de Vigo at Anfield, as we bowed out at the Third Round stage of the UEFA Cup 4-1 on aggregate, having been an unused substitute in the first leg.
Gerrard will now draw level with the legendary Ian Callaghan. Cally helped us to claim the European Cup in 1977, with two UEFA Cups and the UEFA Super Cup also amongst his roll of honours. His 89 continental games consisted of thirty in the European Cup, 24 in the UEFA Cup, seventeen each in the old Fairs Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup and one UEFA Super Cup match.
John Arne Riise is also moving up the list, and is just eight European matches behind skipper, with Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypiä occupying the top two positions.
