Sami Hyypiä is LFC’s new Euro number three
Thursday, 4th October 2007
Sami Hyypiä last night became Liverpool's joint #3 all-time record appearance holder in European competition, when he turned out in our dismal home defeat by Olympique de Marseille. This was his 85th game in continental competition for Liverpool and he has already helped us to claim four European trophies. However, he is currently only number 24 in terms of games in all competitions, although he may break into the Top 20 later this season.

Sami's 85 European games to date include 58 in the Champions League, 25 in the UEFA Cup, and two UEFA Super Cup fixtures. His first European appearance came back in September 2000 when he played in our goalless draw with Rapid Bucureşti at Anfield that took us through to the UEFA Cup Second Round, having missed the first leg in Romania.

Hyypiä has now drawn level with the legendary Tommy Smith. The Anfield Iron scored to help us to claim the European Cup in 1977, with two UEFA Cups and the UEFA Super Cup also amongst his roll of honours. His 85 continental games consisted of 26 in the European Cup, 22 in the old Fairs Cup, nineteen in the UEFA Cup, sixteen in the European Cup Winners' Cup and two UEFA Super Cup matches.

Steven Gerrard is also moving up the list, and is just four European matches behind his Finnish team-mate, with John Arne Riise also in the club's top ten, and Jamie Carragher standing proudly at number one.
