As a Liverpool XI prepares to face Colchester United for the first time on Saturday, YNWA looks back at our only other previous encounters with teams from Essex, which consist solely of five FA Cup meetings with the U's great rivals, Southend United.
The Shrimpers held us to a goalless draw at Roots Hall in a Third Round meeting in January 1979. We went on to win the Anfield replay 3-0, thanks to goals from Jimmy Case, Kenny Dalglish and Ray Kennedy. We reached the Semi-finals that year, before eventually succumbing to Manchester United after a replay.
Half-back Johnny Wheeler scored in January 1957, but it was not enough to prevent us losing 2-1 to Southend United, then in the Third Division South, at Roots Hall in the Third Round.
The Shrimpers again
We were paired with Southend at the same stage the following season. We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield with our score coming from a Ray Smith own goal, but right-back John Molyneux struck his first reds goal as we won the replay 3-2 four days later, as well as putting through his own net. Centre-half Dick White scored his only reds goal, with Antonio Rowley also on target. We made it to the Sixth Round that season before falling to Blackburn Rovers.
