Olympique de Marseille v Liverpool (11/12/2007) - Meet the Referee
Sunday, 9th December 2007
Terje Hauge of Norway will referee our win or bust Champions League final group match in France against Marseille.

The 42-year old from Bergen has been on the FIFA list since 1993, and has a list of international fixtures to his name. He was Norway's representative in Japan for the World Cup in 2002 and in Portugal for EURO2004. He managed one game in Japan when Cameroon beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 in a group match. He went one better in Portugal for EURO2004 and managed two games. He was in the middle as the hosts beat Russia 2-0 and when the Czech Republic beat Germany 2-1, a game that included a goal from ex-red Milan Baros.

He is a season Champions League referee with nearly 40 games under his belt since his first match in September 2000 at Old Trafford as Manchester United trounced Anderlecht 5-1. He has refereed at every stage in the Champions League, his pinnacle being the 2006 Final in Paris as Barcelona defeated Arsenal 2-1.

This will be the fifth time we have had the Norwegian in the middle, and our record is won two, drawn and lost one. All but one of his previous games have been at Anfield, the exception was a 1-1 draw in Glasgow against Celtic in March 2003.
Back in 2003/04 he refereed the all Spanish UEFA Cup semi-final 2nd leg clash between Valencia and Villareal. A match that included Reina in goal for Villareal and Sissoko in midfield for Valencia who were managed by Rafa Benitez at the time, ex-red Pellegrino came off the bench for Valencia as well. He has yet to referee Marseille in European competition.

Like our own John Arne Riise he is a former winner of the Norwegian ‘Kniksen Awards'. The awards established in 1990 honour the best Norwegian players and referees each season.

As usual all the officials are from the same country, his assistants are Steinar Holvik and Jan Petter Randen with Tommy Skjerven as the fourth official.

Some memorable matches involving Norwegian referees and Liverpool.

04/11/97 (R.Pedersen) - Fowler and Reidle give us a 2-0 win against Strasbourg, but we once again bow out 3-2 on aggregate from the UEFA Cup.

28/08/01 (T.Hauge) - FC Haka are beaten 4-1 at Anfield as Liverpool enter the Champions League proper for the first time.

19/03/02 (R.Pedersen) - Gerard Houllier makes an emotional return to Anfield after his life saving operation as goals from Jari Litmanen and Emile Heskey beat Roma to ensure we progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

30/10/02 (T.Hauge) - A European lesson for Liverpool at Anfield as Valencia go back to Spain 1-0 victors.
