Portsmouth v Liverpool (28/04/2007) - Meet the Referee
Friday, 27th April 2007
Steve Bennett of Orpington in Kent takes charge of his fifth Liverpool game of the season as we travel South to play Portsmouth.
The 46-year old FIFA official took up the whistle in 1984 and has been refereeing in The Premiership since 1999. But before that he became a Football League linesman in 1992, a Premiership linesman a season later. In 1995 he was on the FIFA list of linesman and became a Football League referee. He was promoted to the FIFA list of referees in 2001, and he was given the dubious distinction of being the referee in charge of a game between the two lowest ranking countries when Bhutan met Montserrat in June 2003.
This season he has refereed at both ends of the scale of football, from a European Championship qualifier between Slovakia and Czech Republic to places like Weston Super-Mare and Eastleigh in the Football Conference South. He has also been to Turkey and Italy for games in the Champions League at Fenerbahce and Inter Milan.
Bennett is one of the games highly thought of referees, but is not a favourite of the fans with his strict attitude. He has given his first domestic final two seasons ago at Chelsea gained their first trophy under Jose Mourinho beating us 3-2 after extra time in the Carling Cup. He then went on to be the fourth official to Graham Poll in the UEFA Cup Final. One thing you must expect though is a card of one colour being shown by Bennett, his last Premiership match without a caution or dismissal was way back in November 2004 - over 70 plus games ago.
Steve was yesterday appointed to his first FA Cup Final and the first one at the new Wembley, it will make a nice hat-trick for him as he was an assistant referee in the 1995 Final and the fourth official for the 2001 one.
He has already refereed Portsmouth three times this season, and all those games ended in draws - a 1-1 home draw against Fulham, 2-2 at Arsenal and 0-0 at Reading. In face his last 5 Portsmouth games have all ended in draws.
This will be his 25th Premiership game involving Liverpool, only Gallagher and Graham Poll have refereed us more. He has already amasses 138 bookings and 13 dismissals this season. He tends to book our Spanish players with seven out of the last eleven yellow cards being shown to a Liverpool player being from that country. Alonso appears to be his least favourite player with 4 of those cautions going to the midfielder, Bennett is also responsible for the only dismissal on Alonso's Liverpool career. In fact the last two Liverpool players he has sent-off have been Spanish with Josemi the other player to finish the game early.
His assistants are Guy Beale and Phil Sharp with Barry Knight as the fourth official.
