YNWA takes a look back at previous memorable League meetings on the south coast as we make our 28th League trip to Fratton Park on Saturday. We have a fairly poor record at Portsmouth, having won eight, drawn six and been beaten thirteen times.
Last time around
Our final League game of the season resulted in a 3-1 victory as we won our eleventh consecutive match. Robbie Fowler was on target before Peter Crouch grabbed our hundredth goal of the campaign, and a club record 21st from a substitute, and Djibril Cissé struck his sixth goal in nine outings. The only downside was an injury to Xabi Alonso that affected his involvement in the FA Cup Final a week later. This win took us to 82, our highest tally in a 38-game season.
Other recent visits
Milan Baroš played his hundredth reds game as we won 2-1 in April 2005, with our goals coming from Fernando Morientes and Luis García. In October 2003, we lost 1-0 to an early goal from ex-red Patrik Berger on our first visit for more than fifteen years.
Wins on the spin
We won 3-1 in December 1951, our second successive win at Fratton Park, and the same score as the previous season. Centre-forward Jack Smith was on target, while Billy Liddell bagged a brace. This is the only time we have won on two consecutive trips to Portsmouth, and our equal record win there. Jimmy Payne struck twice the year before with Jack Balmer also on target.
Heavy defeats
We lost 5-1 in December 1953 when Peter Harris bagged a treble for Pompey with Sammy Smyth grabbing our consolation. We were thumped 6-2 in September 1936, with Alf Hanson and Berry Nieuwenhuys bagging our goals. We were also well beaten in November 1930, this time 4-0.
Beginnings and endings
In February 1928, our first trip to Portsmouth resulted in a 1-0 defeat. Right-half Tom Morrison made his debut in this game. Outside-right William Watkinson made his 24th and final reds appearance in our 2-1 defeat in April 1950 at the hands of the reigning champions who were well on their way to retaining the title. Albert Stubbins netted our goal.
Other memorable meetings
We won 2-0 in February 1988 thanks to a John Barnes brace. It had been 27 years since our last visit and this was our first win there since December 1951. This victory took our unbeaten run that season to 27 League games as we closed in on our seventeenth title.
Our only meeting at Fratton Park outside the top flight ended 2-2 in March 1961, with Alan Banks and winger John Morrissey on the scoresheet as we led twice. Berry Nieuwenhuys struck on his 27th birthday as we drew 1-1 in November 1938. A rare William Salisbury goal gave us a 1-0 win ten years earlier, our first victory at Fratton Park.
