Jamie Carragher will tomorrow evening become Liverpool's joint all-time record appearance holder in European competition, assuming he plays in our Champions League Semi-final first leg at Chelsea. This will be his 89th game in continental competition for Liverpool and he has already helped us to claim four European trophies. However, he is currently only number eighteen in terms of games in all competitions, and is probably two seasons away from breaking into the Top 10.
Jamie's 88 European games to date include 58 in the Champions League, 28 in the UEFA Cup, and two UEFA Super Cup fixtures, the most recent of which led to him lifting his first trophy as stand-in Liverpool captain in August 2005. His first European appearance came back in September 1997 when he played in our goalless draw with Celtic at Anfield that took us through to the UEFA Cup Second Round, having remained on the bench during the first leg at Parkhead.
Carra will now draw level with the legendary Ian Callaghan. Cally helped us to claim the European Cup in 1977, with two UEFA Cups and the UEFA Super Cup also amongst his roll of honours. His 89 continental games consisted of thirty in the European Cup, 24 in the UEFA Cup, seventeen each in the old Fairs Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup and one UEFA Super Cup match.
Sami Hyypiä is also moving up the list, and is just eight European matches behind his central defensive partner, with Steven Gerrard and John Arne Riise also in the club's top ten.
