Reina reaches a ton
Thursday, 19th April 2007
Pepe Reina will play his 100th game for Liverpool on Saturday when we face Wigan Athletic at Anfield.

He started his career at Barcelona and played against Liverpool in both legs of the UEFA Cup Semi-final in 2001 as an 18-year old. The following year he joined Villareal. He never missed a League game in his second and third seasons, and in his last season he saved 7 of the 9 penalties awarded against his side.

He signed for Liverpool for a fee of £6m in July 2005 and immediately took over from Jerzy Dudek, making his debut against Total Network Solutions in the Champions League First Qualifying Round only 9 days later. He made his Premiership debut in the goalless draw at Middlesbrough on 13th August 2005, and then 4 days later made his senior Spanish international debut, keeping a clean sheet in a friendly against Uruguay in Gijón.

Reina went on to play 53 times in his first season, keeping 30 clean sheets and conceding 34 goals. He was cautioned three times, twice against Chelsea and was also sent-off against Chelsea after Robben went down like a sack of spuds during an altercation. Chelsea are, perhaps unsurprisingly, the club he has faced most often since moving to England, with the possibility of a ninth and tenth encounter over the next two weeks.

Despite conceding 3 goals in the FA Cup Final against West Ham United, he redeemed himself by saving three of West Ham's penalties during the shoot-out.

This season Reina has only missed 5 games, 2 in the Carling Cup, 1 each in the Champions League and FA Cup, and 1 in the Premiership when his wife gave birth to their first child. He has also been cautioned just the once against his old employers during a 1-0 defeat by Barcelona at Anfield.

He has kept 24 clean sheets so far and conceded 31 goals in his 46 games.

His previous 99 games have come via 66 Premiership appearances, 23 in the Champions League, 5 in the FA Cup, 2 in the World Club Championship, and 1 each in the Carling Cup, Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup. He has a total of 54 clean sheets and conceded just 65 goals in these 99 games.
