Reading v Liverpool (07/04/2007) - Meet the Referee
Thursday, 5th April 2007
Peter Walton of Northampton will referee his third Liverpool game of his career as we face Reading in the Premiership.
Peter has been a Premiership referee for four seasons now, but last season he was temporarily demoted to the Football League.
He started his refereeing career in the local Northampton leagues in 1986, and in only 7 years he was running the line as a Football League Assistant. After only one season he was promoted to a Premiership Assistant Referee and then a FIFA assistant two years later in 1996. In the same year he was on the line in the FA Cup Final as Manchester United won 1-0 against Liverpool, and followed that up by being an assistant in the European Championships.
He was promoted to a Football League referee in 1998 and spent five seasons there before getting the call to the Premiership.
His first Premiership game was one of the Premierships better games, as Wolverhampton Wanderers turned over a 3-0 half time deficit at Molineux to win 4-3 against Leicester City.
He has already refereed a game involving Liverpool and Reading this season, that was the Carling Cup clash at Anfield when we ran out 4-3 winners.
He has only refereed one other Reading game this season, which was a creditable 1-1 draw at home to Manchester United back in September.
His assistants for the game are Andy Halliday and James Linnington with Danny McDermid as the fourth official.
