In advance of Tuesday evening's Champions League Quarter-final encounter at PSV Eindhoven, YNWA looks at the our previous visits to the Netherlands over the years, as well as our three prior meetings with PSV to date.
Last time around
We won 3-0 at the Philips Stadion eight days ago, with Steven Gerrard, John Arne Riise and Peter Crouch bagging the goals that gave us a healthy first leg advantage. Jamie Carragher played his 58th game in the European Cup, overtaking Phil Neal's club record in the process. Meanwhile, Gerrard's fifteenth goal in the competition took him past Ian Rush to become our record goalscorer in Europe's premier club competition. Less happily, Fabio Aurélio ruptured his Achilles tendon, ruling him out for the rest of the season.
In the group stage
We met PSV in a competitive fixture for the first time last September, with Dirk Kuyt making his first return to his homeland and Jan Kromkamp and Bolo Zenden both featuring against their former club. The game ended goalless, with Steven Gerrard coming closest to breaking the deadlock when he struck the inside of a post late on.
The Anfield return in November resulted in a 2-0 victory with Steven Gerrard striking just after the hour mark, the first time they had conceded in 714 minutes, to draw him level with Ian Rush as our top European Cup goalscorer on fourteen. Peter Crouch grabbed a late second as we ensured top spot in the group with a game to spare.
Our first encounter with PSV
A testimonial was held in honour of Jan Mølby in August 1996. PSV Eindhoven provided the opposition, and left Anfield having won 3-2 with Mølby playing just under an hour. Stan Collymore was on target with Stig Inge Bjørnebye also heading a goal after we had gone three goals behind, while the eventual winning goal came from second half substitute Bolo Zenden!
European Cup trips to Holland
We suffered our record European defeat in December 1966, losing 5-1 to a Johann Cruyff-inspired Ajax in a European Cup Second Round first leg tie at the fog-bound Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam, with Chris Lawler grabbing our last-minute consolation. In fact, the pitch was so foggy that Shanks was even able to wander on to give instructions to half-back Willie Stevenson without the officials noticing him! He famously decreed that the reds would turn things around in the second leg, but it was not to be, as we only drew 2-2.
We played AZ'67 Alkmaar in the same stadium in October 1981, drawing 2-2 at the same stage of the European Cup, with David Johnson and Sammy Lee on target. We won the second leg 3-2 but were knocked out in the next round by CSKA Sofia.
Michael's record
Michael Owen scored his fifteenth away goal in Europe in November 2002, a club record, as we beat Vitesse Arnhem 1-0 at their Gelredome in the Third Round of the UEFA Cup. Surprisingly, this was our first first-class game in the Netherlands on a club ground, and our first win in the country in European competition.
Tournament games
We held Ajax to a goalless draw in The Sony Amsterdam Tournament 2003 at the Amsterdam ArenA in August of that year, with both of our earlier games against Ajax in the Amsterdam Tournament ending in defeat. We benefited from an own goal as we lost 2-1 at their old Stadion De Meer in August 1977, while Robbie Fowler nabbed our consolation in a 3-1 defeat at the ArenA in July 2001 in our closing fixture of the competition, with Jari Litmanen featuring for the reds against his old side.
Mark Lawrenson bagged a brace, with Kenny Dalglish also on target as we drew the third-place play-off of the Rotterdam AD Toernooi 3-3 with Feyenoord in August 1983.
Dutch friendlies
We have also visited the Netherlands for another seven pre-season friendlies, all of which took place in the month of August between 1969 and 1976. We played three games on tour prior to the 1976/77 season, failing to win any of them. We lost 2-0 at Feyenoord and then drew 1-1 with Roda JC three days later, with Terry McDermott on target. Another three days later, we lost 2-0 at Twente.
We also visited Feyenoord back in 1969, when Peter Thompson netted for the reds in a 1-1 draw, with Jimmy Case on the scoresheet in a match that ended by the same score at Roda JC six years later. Our two tips to Utrecht both ended in victory at the Stadion Galgenwaard, with Steve Heighway netting in 1972 and John Toshack and Peter Cormack on target three years later.
