In advance of Wednesday evening's Champions League Quarter-final second leg against PSV Eindhoven at Anfield, YNWA looks at the careers of some of those players have represented both sides over the years.
Current double agents
Bolo Zenden started his career at the Philips Stadion, helping them to claim the Dutch Cup in 1996 and the League title the following season. He struck 32 goals in 109 Eredivisie games for the Boeren before joining the Dutch contingent at Barcelona under Louis van Gaal in 1998. He signed on at Anfield on a free transfer in July 2005 after his one-year contract with Middlesbrough had expired. He has so far notched twice in 38 senior reds games, as injury has interrupted his two seasons at Anfield to date, although he has featured in all three meetings with his former employers this season. However, he has already helped us to claim the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield in his brief time with the reds.
Jan Kromkamp joined PSV Eindhoven last August after just eight months at Anfield, in which time he had made eighteen first-team appearances, helping us to claim the FA Cup back in May. He had arrived in L4 in a swap deal with Villarreal for Josemi. Kromkamp has so far turned out 36 times for the Dutch champions, including all three encounters with the reds, and was on target in their Champions League win at Galatasaray in October.
The mad Dutchman
Erik Meijer moved to PSV Eindhoven from MVV Maastricht for £1.2m in 1994. He grabbed thirteen goals in 27 games for them before moving to Germany to sign for KFC Uerdingen 05 in time for the 1995/96 season. Erik joined the reds on a Bosman free transfer from Bayer 04 Leverkusen in July 1999, but could only make 27 appearances. He only found the back of the net twice for us, when he grabbed a brace in a 5-1 League Cup Second Round first leg win at Hull City, his first start for the club. However, he was a popular figure amongst reds fans despite his lack of success at Anfield, due to his never-say-die attitude and infectious enthusiasm, even in reserves outings. He had a short loan spell with Preston North End towards the end of his time with the reds, before returning to Germany to join Hamburger SV on a free transfer in December 2000.
Other double agents
Abel Xavier spent the 1998/99 season with PSV Eindhoven, grabbing two goals in nineteen League games and winning a medal in their Dutch Super Cup triumph. He moved directly across the park to join the reds from Everton for £800,000 in January 2002 and netted twice in 21 reds games, of which we only lost three, including on his debut in a 6-0 thumping of Ipswich Town at Portman Road, making him the most recent reds player to score on his club debut. His next stop was Hannover 96 in February 2004 having been released, but he is currently back in the Premiership with Middlesbrough, who sacked him following a failed drugs test, but have since re-signed him.
Glenn Hysén was Sweden's Player of the Year in 1983, which helped earn him a move to PSV, from where he went on to Fiorentina. He signed for the reds from the Italian club for £600,000 in June 1989. He bagged three goals in 93 reds games, helping us to claim the FA Charity Shield and League title in his first season. He moved back to Sweden to join GAIS in May 1992.
