Liverpool's new European #7
Wednesday, 10th August 2005
Sami Hyypiä tonight climbed to joint #7 in our list of all-time European appearances, with his 67th game in continental competition for the reds at CSKA Sofia.

Sami drew level with Irish wing wizard Steve Heighway, whose European games included 26 in the European Cup, 23 in the UEFA Cup, eight in the Cup Winners’ Cup, seven in the Fairs Cup and three in the Super Cup. Heighway managed to nab a very respectable eleven goals in continental competition, with Sami so far having bagged six in Europe.

The mighty Finn is just two games behind his defensive partner Jamie Carragher, with Steven Gerrard also in the club’s top ten and Dietmar Hamann just outside in eleventh, and John Arne Riise closing fast on the top ten, as he currently stands at sixteenth.

Next in line for Sami and Carra is Phil Neal, with their sights set on several players above them in this ranking if the reds have another successful season in the Champions League. In fact a trip all the way to the Final in Paris next May will see Hyypiä move into the club’s all-time top three for European games, as he would reach eighty games.
