YNWA takes a look back at our past Anfield meetings with Bulgarian opposition as we welcome CSKA Sofia to Anfield on Tuesday for the third time, in the Champions League third qualifying round.
Our first visitors from Bulgaria were CSKA Sofia whom we met in the Third Round of the European Cup, on our way to a third victory in the competition. They had knocked the holders Nottingham Forest out in the first round, and proved tough opponents.
However, Graeme Souness bagged a superb hat-trick as we won 5-1 on the night to become the first and so far only reds player to bag two European trebles in the same season. Sammy Lee and Terry McDermott were also on target. The Bulgarians actually made a number of good chances but either missed them, or saw Ray Clemence repel their efforts. A David Johnson goal in the return leg took us through to the Semi-final 6-1 on aggregate, where we faced Bayern München.
We met CSKA Sofia in the European Cup Third Round for the second successive season, again playing the first leg at Anfield, with Sammy Lee playing his hundredth reds game. We created plenty of chances, but could only net once, through Ronnie Whelan. Unfortunately we went crashing out in the return, losing 2-0 after extra time. The Bulgarian outfit lost in the next round, to Bayern München.
Milan Baroš played his fiftieth reds game as we beat PFC Levski Sofia 2-0 in the first leg of our UEFA Cup third Round tie at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard and Harry Kewell on the scoresheet. We won the return in Bulgaria 4-2 to progress comfortably.
