Liverpool’s new European #7
Monday, 1st August 2005
Sami Hyypiä will climb to joint #7 in our list of all-time European appearances, with his 66th game in continental competition at home to FKB Kaunas on Tuesday, if selected.

Sami will draw level with 1960’s right-back Chris Lawler, whose 66 European games included the European Cup Winners’ Cup Final in 1966 and both legs of our UEFA Cup Final seven years later, as we claimed a European trophy for the first time. The Silent Knight bagged eleven goals against continental opposition, something Carragher is still waiting to do.

The mighty Finn is just three games behind his defensive partner Jamie Carragher, with Steven Gerrard also in the club’s top ten and Dietmar Hamann just outside in eleventh.

Next in line is Irish wing wizard Steve Heighway, with Sami’s sights set on several players above him in this ranking if the reds have another successful season in the Champions League. In fact a trip all the way to the Final in Paris next May will see Hyypiä move into the club’s all-time top three for European games, as he would reach 81 games.

Top 10 European Appearances:
1. Ian Callaghan (89)
2. Tommy Smith (85)
3. Ray Clemence (80)
4. Emlyn Hughes (79)
5. Phil Neal (74)
6. Jamie Carragher (68)
7. Steve Heighway (67)
8. Chris Lawler (66)
9. Sami Hyypiä (65)
10. Steven Gerrard (57)
