Liverpool failed to capitalise on their game in hand as Portsmouth scored a dramatic late equaliser on Tuesday night.
Liverpool had hoped to put in a convincing display to put the derby defeat at Goodison Park at the weekend behind them. However the crowd didn?t turn up ? 35,000! and neither did the players in the first half in a totally lacklustre 45 minutes.
Steven Gerrard finally broke the deadlock with 20 minutes left with a thunderous shot from outside the box that flew into the net via the post. It should have signalled an onslaught but the second goal never came. And with the minutes ticking away BenÝtez brought on Josemi for the tiring N˙˝ez and his poor positioning led to the equaliser. The unmarked Taylor whipped in a cross-come shot that Dudek parried up into the air and Lua Lua beat Hyypiń to the ball to head home from close range.
Liverpool fans held the heads in disbelief, but after late winners against Crystal Palace, Arsenal and Olympiacos we could hardly complain.
