Trebles galore
1977 - Terry McDermott grabbed a hat-trick as we thumped Hamburger SV 6-0 at Anfield in the second leg of the UEFA Super Cup, to win the trophy 7-1 on aggregate, with Phil Thompson, David Fairclough and Kenny Dalglish also on target. This game marked Kevin Keegan’s first return to Anfield after leaving for Germany in the summer, and he was roundly booed whenever he touched the ball.

1930 - Bobby Gurney bagged three of his sixteen strikes against us as Sunderland beat us by the odd goal in eleven at Roker Park, with Tommy Lucas putting through his own net to open the scoring. Outside-right Danny McRorie struck his first reds goal with Fred Hopkin nabbing his twelfth and last for the club. Gordon Hodgson also added to a very late Jimmy Smith brace. We were without Hopkin for much of the game after he had to be carried off injured, spending half an hour unconscious in the dressing room. We therefore became the only visiting side to have twice scored five goals on Wearside without tasting victory, having also done so in a draw in January 1907. James Connor nabbed the first of his five goals past us, with Jimmy Leonard also on target.
1902 - Sam Raybould scored four goals, including a penalty, as we trounced Grimsby Town 9-2 in a top-flight game at Anfield. Edgar Chadwick and Arthur Goddard both also bagged braces, with George Livingstone also on target.

Rushie’s testimonial
1994 - A testimonial match for Ian Rush was staged at Anfield, with the reds seeing off Celtic 6-0. The great man himself scored, with the other goals coming from Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Steve McManaman, Phil Babb, Neil Ruddock and a Mark McNally own goal.

Sami’s record at the Bridge
2005 - Sami Hyypiä set a new club record for consecutive European games by an outfield player when he appeared for the 56th time in a row as our goalless draw at Chelsea ensured that we finished top of the group, with Dietmar Hamann managing to play the full game despite a horror tackle by Michael Essien. This guaranteed us a supposedly easier draw in the last sixteen, when we were paired with SL Benfica.
1987 - We entertained Chelsea in a live televised Sunday game, coming from behind to win this League meeting 2-1 thanks to a John Aldridge penalty and a late Steve McMahon goal, who notched in his third consecutive match. Gordon Durie had put the Blues ahead from the spot with one of his five strikes against the reds.

Pepe’s century
2010 – Pepe Reina kept his hundredth clean sheet in the League, in a new club record 198 games. We beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Anfield, with David N’Gog and Ryan Babel both netting their final reds strikes and Martin Škrtel playing his hundredth game for the club. Maxi Rodríguez added the third as ex-reds boss Gérard Houllier was given a warm welcome on his first return to L4. Fernando Torres missed the game as he that day became a father for the second time, to Leo.

Off for free
2000 - Steve Staunton rejoined Aston Villa on a free transfer after a second two-year spell at Anfield. He had struck seven times in 148 reds appearances in total. He notched once in 87 games in his second spell at Villa Park, before moving on to Coventry City in August 2003.
1996 - Reserves midfielder Phil Charnock left for Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer, following a successful loan spell at Gresty Road. He had only made two first-team appearances in three years as a professional at Anfield, both in cup competitions. He spent six years with the Alex, before moving to Bury.

Beating the Blues
1969 - We won 3-0 at Goodison Park thanks to goals from Emlyn Hughes, a spectacular Sandy Brown headed own goal and Bobby Graham.

Most recently
2012 - Jordan Henderson netted the only goal of our UEFA Europa League group game at Udinese past ex-reds loanee keeper Daniele Padelli as we reached the knock-out phase. Turkish midfielder Nuri Şahin played his twelfth and last game for the reds, with the home side a man down for the final ten minutes after Giovanni Pasquale was sent off.
2014 – Sunderland held the reds to a goalless draw at Anfield as Martin Škrtel played his 200th League game for the club.

A win at Ewood
2008 - We won 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Xabi Alonso and Yossi Benayoun striking after an hour. Roque Santa Cruz headed a goal back for the home side before Steven Gerrard bagged an injury time clincher.

Team of the Year
2001 - The reds were named Team of the Year by the Sportswriters Association of Great Britain, following our five trophies that year.

Held in the North East
2003 - Danny Murphy put us in front at Newcastle United. It took an Alan Shearer penalty to level the scores as we held out with an injury-ravaged team, the last of his eight goals past us, with Emile Heskey playing in a withdrawn role. Steven Gerrard was making his 150th League appearance, while Jon Otsemobor made his League debut.

Beaten by the mancs
1997 - We lost 3-1 at home to Manchester United. After a goalless first half, Andy Cole put the visitors ahead, following an error by Bjørn Tore Kvarme. Robbie Fowler then equalised from the spot after Michael Owen was fouled. However, David Beckham put United back in front from a free-kick before Cole added his second from a corner, another of his eleven goals against the reds.

A talented Dane
2005 - Future red Daniel Agger was named ‘Talent of the year’ for the second successive year by the Danish FA.

Mixed fortunes against Spurs
We have twice met Tottenham Hotspur on this day in history.
1980 - We won a top-flight meeting at Anfield 2-1, with David Johnson and Ray Kennedy on target. This was Kenny Dalglish’s 147th consecutive League appearance for the reds, but he missed our next two First Division games after coming off in this match shortly after an hour. Steve Archibald struck the first of his six goals past us.
1972 - We lost 3-1 at White Hart Lane in a League Cup Fifth Round replay with Ian Callaghan nabbing our late consolation. Martin Chivers nabbed two of his seven strikes past the reds, with John Pratt also netting.

Disappointment against the Villains
We faced Aston Villa twice more on this day in history, without winning on either occasion.
1913 - Winger Jackie Sheldon netted our consolation from the spot as we lost 2-1 at Villa Park, the first of his twenty reds goals. Harry Hampton nabbed two of his fifteen goals against the reds, with one being a penalty.
1947 – Left-back Eddie Spicer netted the first of his two reds goals, with Albert Stubbins and Jack Balmer also on the scoresheet was we were held to a 3-3 draw in another top-flight meeting at Anfield. Trevor Ford struck the first of his seven goals past us, with Jackie Martin and Sailor Brown also on target.

Management moves
2009 - Markus Babbel was sacked as Manager of VfB Stuttgart, having been in charge for thirteen months.
2010 – Reserves boss Peter Beardsley was placed in temporary charge of Newcastle United following the sacking of Chris Hughton.

Hosting the Robins
1926 - Wrexham visited Anfield for the first time, when they beat New Brighton 3-1 in the second replay of their FA Cup First Round tie.

Daniele in action
2006 - Future reds loanee keeper Daniele Padelli won his fifth and final cap for Italy Under-20’s, while on loan at Crotone from Sampdoria, as they beat Germany 1-0.
